In a shocking turn of events, Babar Azam has resigned as captain of the Pakistan cricket team in all three formats. The news comes just days after Pakistan’s disappointing performance in the ICC World Cup 2023, where they failed to qualify for the semi-finals.
Azam, who was appointed captain in 2019, has been under immense pressure since Pakistan’s early exit from the World Cup. He had previously led the team to the semi-finals of the T20 World Cup in 2021, but their failure to make it out of the group stage in the 50-over World Cup proved to be the final straw.
In a statement announcing his decision, Azam said that he had taken the decision after “careful consideration” and that he felt it was in the best interests of the team. He also thanked the PCB for their support during his time as captain.
The PCB has accepted Azam’s resignation and is now in the process of finding a replacement. Shan Masood is considered to be the frontrunner to take over as Test captain, while Shaheen Shah Afridi is likely to lead the team in the T20I format.
Azam’s resignation is a major blow to Pakistan cricket, but it is also an opportunity for the team to start afresh. The PCB will be hoping to appoint a new captain who can bring a fresh perspective and lead the team to success in the years to come.
