Federal Caretaker Minister of Information and Broadcasting, Murtaza Solangi, finds himself embroiled in a controversy after a video surfaced online showcasing an altercation with BBC reporter, Mobeen Azhar. The incident has sparked criticism and raised concerns about press freedom in Pakistan.
The video shows Azhar approaching Solangi, introducing himself and posing a question about press freedom in the country. Instead of engaging, Solangi accuses the reporter of “forcing” an interview and attempts to grab his phone. He further criticizes Azhar’s conduct, stating, “act like a BBC journalist and not Paparazzi.”
Azhar counters by reminding Solangi of their prior agreement for an interview, asserting, “Yes, you did. 6 o’clock on Wednesday.” This accusation remains unaddressed by the minister in the video.
The incident has drawn widespread condemnation, with many voicing concerns about the treatment of journalists and the state of press freedom in Pakistan. The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) has urged authorities to investigate the matter and ensure the safety of all journalists.
As of now, no official statement has been released by either Solangi or the Pakistani government regarding the incident. The video continues to garner attention and fuel discussions on press freedom in the country.
