Kolkata Rape Case: A 31-year-old postgraduate trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata was gruesomely raped and murdered, outraging people all across the country and scaring them about their safety at work places for health workers. The gruesome act took place at the seminar hall of the hospital where the lady was found dead. According to the police, the accused, one Sanjay Roy, has been arrested, but many still believe that a larger conspiracy may be behind the act.
Colleagues and parents of the victim expressed concern regarding how the crime had happened. People question whether Roy knew that she would be in the seminar hall alone, or even whether she was a target to begin with. The diaries of hers reveal that she was extremely stressed due to the workload, working shifts of 36 hours nonstop.
There are now suspicions that she might have been killed for her knowledge of illegal activities within the hospital. A colleague said she was aware of a drug-siphoning racket and might have been trying to expose it. Investigation The investigation has focused on this angle after the case was handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation following concerns about the manner of inquiry by the police in the initial days.
The crime has come out drawing comparisons with the 2012 Delhi gang rape case regarding its enormity and has been followed by protests nationwide by doctors who demanded justice. The family of the victim, just like the public, is asking for the most stringent punishment to the accused. Further probe into the case by CBI will reveal more about the possible conspiracy and illegal activities associated with it.
