Street crimes in Karachi continue to swell, and Citizen Police Liaison Committee has released the latest statistics that do not paint a very rosy picture for September 2024. According to the report, the metropolis witnessed 5,533 cases of street crimes during the month. Motorcycle snatching or theft emerged as one of the most common offenses, with the report showing there were 3,982 cases reported during the month.

Stolen or snatched away were 190 cars and 1,651 mobile phones taken forcibly from unsuspecting owners, according to the CPLC. Also reported were five cases of extortion, two kidnapping for ransom.

This spate of street crime has been a continuing phenomenon in Karachi that has seen nearly 100 citizens lose their lives while resisting robberies in the first nine months of this year alone. Figures show that 15,000 mobile phone thefts, and an astonishing 35,000 motorcycle thefts have been reported to authorities during this period. Not forgetting, around 1,200 vehicles have been kidnapped or stolen, making its people feel insecure on the streets.

One of the tragic incidents was recently seen in Korangi, Karachi, when robbers opened fire on Abdul Malik and his son when they returned after withdrawing Rs. 1 million from a bank. CCTV footage captured this attack when the robbers stopped their car. Abdul Malik resisted and threw the money bag away, fighting with the criminals. Unfortunately, he got shot dead on the spot and his son got injured.

With this alarming increased spread of street crimes, public safety has been a strong point of concern since citizens stand the risks of getting the next victim in a lawless town.
