In response to dangerously high pollution levels across Lahore and other cities in Punjab, the provincial government has announced a new work-from-home (WFH) policy aimed at reducing smog. This directive, issued amid one of the worst smog seasons recorded, encourages both public and private sector employees to work remotely where possible. The policy is expected to remain in place until air quality significantly improves
The move comes as Lahore remains one of the most polluted cities globally, with its Air Quality Index (AQI) hovering at hazardous levels.
By reducing the number of vehicles on the roads, authorities hope to decrease vehicular emissions, which are a major contributor to the region’s pollution. The Punjab administration has also directed industries to lower emissions, emphasizing immediate compliance to mitigate health risks associated with the smog.
Environmental experts have applauded the decision but urge that more long-term solutions be implemented, such as greener urban planning and stricter regulations on industrial emissions.
Schools in several districts have already been closed temporarily, and citizens are encouraged to wear masks and limit outdoor activities.
