German star sets sights on bigger milestones as US Open approaches

Top-seeded Alexander Zverev delivered a milestone performance at the Toronto Masters, notching his 500th career ATP match win in a dramatic three-set comeback over Italy’s Matteo Arnaldi. The German tennis star rallied after losing the opening set, ultimately prevailing 6-7 (5/7), 6-3, 6-2 to advance to the fourth round.

Zverev, currently among the favorites for the upcoming US Open, showed resilience and control as he shifted gears in the latter sets. “It’s a great achievement. Not many players reach this number,” he commented. “But I still want 500 more – maybe even more.”

The 27-year-old displayed a slow start but gradually found rhythm from the baseline, improving his consistency and capitalizing on Arnaldi’s unforced errors. Zverev will now face Francisco Cerundolo in the next round, who comfortably beat fellow Argentine Tomas Echeverry in straight sets.

Rising Stars Shake Up Toronto Draw

American Alex Michelsen also made headlines, reaching his first-ever Masters 1000 fourth round. The 20-year-old stunned third-seeded Lorenzo Musetti with a 3-6, 7-6 (7/4), 6-4 win, surviving 50 unforced errors and converting only two of nine break opportunities. “It feels really good,” said Michelsen. “I’ve worked hard, and it’s finally paying off.”

Michelsen will next meet fellow American Learner Tien, who upset Reilly Opelka 7-6 (7/3), 6-3 in another surprise result.

Ruud Rallies, Rune Rolls

Elsewhere, Norway’s Casper Ruud overcame a sluggish start to beat Portugal’s Nuno Borges 7-5, 6-4. The eighth seed was down 4-1 in the first set before mounting a comeback. “I just crawled into the first set,” said Ruud. “I raised my return game and found a way.”

Ruud, who missed Wimbledon due to injury, now faces 11th seed Karen Khachanov. The Russian reached the round of 16 after defeating American qualifier Emilio Nava in three sets.

Meanwhile, fifth seed Holger Rune produced a routine 6-2, 6-4 victory over France’s Alexandre Muller to continue his solid form in Toronto.
