A Historic Collaboration for Higher Education

In a significant step toward modernizing Pakistan’s education landscape, Arizona State University (ASU) has partnered with Pakistani stakeholders to establish the National Institute of Technology (NIT) in Lahore. This collaboration marks the first time a U.S. university will have a physical campus presence in Pakistan, setting a precedent for international academic partnerships in the region.

Scheduled to begin operations in Fall 2025, the NIT campus aims to deliver a globally competitive curriculum tailored to Pakistan’s local educational and cultural context. The initiative is seen as a milestone that could reshape how higher education is approached and delivered in the country.

Academic Structure and Curriculum Focus

NIT will initially feature two core academic divisions: the School of Management Sciences and the School of Data Sciences and Information Technology. These departments will provide students with training in high-demand areas, combining technical skills with business acumen to prepare graduates for both local and global job markets.

The curriculum will reflect American academic standards, infused with Pakistan-specific relevance to ensure students gain both international exposure and local applicability. ASU’s focus on student-centric learning models will be implemented, encouraging critical thinking, problem-solving, and innovation.

Visionaries Behind the Project

This transformative venture is being led by Shahzeb Awan, a University of London-trained lawyer, and Jahanzeb Burana, a Harvard-educated finance expert. Their shared vision is to introduce a globally recognized academic brand to Pakistan in a way that is accessible and impactful for future generations.

The formal agreement between ASU and the Pakistani founders was signed in April 2025 at ASU’s main campus in Tempe, Arizona. Both parties emphasized the long-term strategic value of the partnership in terms of academic excellence, research collaboration, and socioeconomic development.

Dual Degree Programs and Global Opportunities


One of the most notable features of the ASU-NIT collaboration is the dual degree program. Students enrolled at NIT will have the opportunity to earn degrees from both ASU and NIT, offering them a competitive edge in the global job market. This academic structure allows students to complete a portion of their studies in Pakistan while having the option to transfer or attend courses at ASU campuses abroad.

Additionally, NIT students will benefit from ASU’s vast international network through the ASU-Cintana Alliance. This includes potential study-abroad opportunities in locations such as Washington D.C., California, and at more than 30 partner institutions around the world. These global learning experiences are designed to equip Pakistani students with diverse perspectives and enhance their academic credentials.

Government Support and National Significance

The initiative has received strong backing from the Government of Pakistan. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, following a meeting with ASU officials on July 24, lauded the collaboration as a “transformative step” for the country’s educational sector. He emphasized that the creation of NIT aligns with the government’s goal of delivering modern, skill-based education that empowers youth for future challenges.

“This institute will be a world-class platform that enables our youth to thrive in global markets,” the Prime Minister stated, highlighting the government’s commitment to fostering innovation and economic development through education.

Economic and Academic Impact on Pakistan

Beyond academics, the launch of NIT is expected to create significant employment opportunities, attract foreign educational investment, and enhance Pakistan’s global academic reputation. By embedding international standards into local education, NIT represents a new chapter for Pakistani students aiming to compete on a global scale.
