Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has issued a strong directive to address the growing issue of tardiness and absenteeism among government employees in federal offices across Pakistan. Taking notice of reports that many officials were arriving late or not showing up to work at all, the prime minister has emphasized the need for strict adherence to official working hours.
Clear Instructions to All Government Departments
In a recent announcement, Shehbaz Sharif made it clear that punctuality is non-negotiable for all employees serving in ministries, divisions, federal departments, as well as autonomous and semi-autonomous institutions. The prime minister stressed that government employees must be present according to the set working hours and maintain their duty schedules without exceptions.
Accountability for Senior Officials
The prime minister did not limit his instructions to junior staff or lower-level employees. In a move to set an example from the top, he specifically directed all federal secretaries and heads of departments to ensure their own timely arrival and regular attendance. This top-down approach is aimed at fostering a culture of discipline and accountability throughout the civil service.
Official Communication Reinforces PM’s Order
Following the prime minister’s instructions, Secretary Cabinet Division Kamran Ali Afzal communicated the directive through an official letter to the secretaries of all ministries and divisions. The letter reiterated the importance of implementing the prime minister’s orders and highlighted that adherence to office timings is crucial for the effective functioning of government operations.
This renewed focus on punctuality and attendance comes as part of broader efforts to improve governance, enhance efficiency, and restore public trust in federal institutions. Ministries and departments have been warned that laxity in this matter will not be tolerated, and regular monitoring is expected to ensure compliance at all levels.
