BBC Sport Study Places PSL Just Behind IPL
KARACHI: The Pakistan Super League (PSL) has earned global recognition by being named the world’s second most entertaining men’s franchise cricket tournament in a recent BBC Sport report. The PSL trails only the Indian Premier League (IPL), which topped the rankings, cementing its place as a powerhouse of excitement and competitiveness in international cricket.
The BBC Sport study, released earlier this week, analyzed major T20 and short-format cricket leagues from across the world. Alongside the IPL and PSL, the assessment included South Africa’s SA20, Australia’s Big Bash League (BBL), the Caribbean Premier League (CPL), the UAE’s International League T20 (ILT20), and England’s The Hundred.
Data-Driven Rankings and Entertainment Metrics
The study was conducted in collaboration with renowned cricket analytics company CricViz and evaluated leagues using a range of performance and entertainment-related metrics. The criteria included average number of fours and sixes per match, batting strike rates, proportion of games decided in the final over or ball, home advantage patterns, wicket-taking frequency, and the average number of international caps among starting XIs.
A major highlight from the findings was the PSL’s lead in average first-innings scores, with matches averaging 180 runs—one run higher than the IPL’s 179. This high-scoring trend is a testament to the league’s aggressive playing style and ability to deliver thrilling contests.
Close Finishes and Boundary Frequency
In terms of nail-biting finishes, the PSL stood out for having 27.5 percent of its matches decided in the final over, second only to the IPL’s 28.9 percent. This statistic showcases the PSL’s reputation for producing matches that remain undecided until the very end, keeping fans on the edge of their seats.
The league also ranked second in boundaries per game, trailing only the IPL, further highlighting the PSL’s penchant for big hits and high-scoring encounters.
International Experience and Player Quality
When it comes to player quality, the PSL performed exceptionally well. The study found that the PSL averaged 351 international caps among the starting XIs in its matches, making it the second-highest league in this category. The ILT20 in the UAE claimed the top spot with an average of 423 caps, thanks to its greater allowance for overseas players.
By consistently attracting leading international cricketers and providing a platform for emerging Pakistani talent, the PSL has solidified its status as a league where quality and competition go hand in hand.
Entertainment Index and Global Impact
The BBC Sport report aggregated all the measured metrics into an “Entertainment Index,” providing a comprehensive score for each league’s entertainment value. The IPL emerged as the highest-ranked league, scoring 4.53 out of a maximum five, while the PSL was close behind with a score of 3.90.
The ILT20 scored 2.44 in the entertainment index, followed by England’s The Hundred, the CPL, and the SA20. Australia’s Big Bash League rounded out the rankings, finishing last in the entertainment stakes.
PSL’s Rapid Rise and Reputation
Since its launch in 2016, the PSL has quickly grown into one of the most high-profile franchise competitions in the cricketing world. Featuring six city-based teams, the league has become synonymous with fast scoring rates, competitive fixtures, and dramatic finishes. It serves as a vital stage for up-and-coming Pakistani talent, allowing them to showcase their skills alongside and against some of global cricket’s biggest names.
The PSL’s blend of thrilling entertainment, quality cricket, and star power continues to attract fans locally and internationally, reinforcing its place as one of the sport’s most exciting spectacles.
