Historic Achievement for Salah
Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah has etched his name into football history by being crowned the Professional Footballers’ Association (PFA) Player of the Year for the 2024/25 season. The Egyptian superstar becomes the first player ever to win the prestigious award three times, solidifying his status as one of the greatest players to grace the Premier League.
The 33-year-old joined Liverpool in 2017 and has since become a club legend. In this past campaign, he once again showcased his brilliance, finishing as the Premier League’s top scorer with 29 goals while also providing 18 assists. His contributions were instrumental in helping Liverpool secure their record-equalling 20th league title, finishing a commanding 10 points clear of Arsenal.
A Season of Individual Brilliance
Beyond the PFA honor, Salah has collected a clean sweep of personal accolades. He not only won the Premier League Player of the Season award but also secured both the Golden Boot and the Playmaker Award. Remarkably, he is the first player ever to claim all three in a single campaign.
His performances reflected both consistency and versatility—scoring decisive goals in big matches and creating opportunities for teammates with his vision and unselfish play. This balance of scoring and assisting has made Salah one of the most complete forwards in world football.
Third-Time Winner of PFA Award
Salah’s first PFA Player of the Year trophy came in 2018 following a remarkable debut season at Anfield, where he broke multiple scoring records. He claimed his second in 2022, reaffirming his dominance at the top level.
This year, the award was determined by votes from fellow professionals across the 92 Premier League and Football League clubs, highlighting the respect Salah commands among his peers.
The six-man shortlist also included Alexis Mac Allister, Salah’s Liverpool teammate, as well as Newcastle United’s Alexander Isak, Manchester United’s Bruno Fernandes, Arsenal’s Declan Rice, and Chelsea’s rising star Cole Palmer. Salah’s victory over such an impressive group underlines the magnitude of his season.
Contract Extension Ends Transfer Speculation
In April, Salah signed a new two-year contract extension with Liverpool, ending months of speculation linking him with a move to the Saudi Pro League. His commitment ensures he will continue leading Liverpool’s attack into his mid-thirties, as the club eyes further domestic and European success.
The deal was met with widespread celebration among fans, who view Salah not only as a record-breaker but also as the face of Liverpool’s modern era of success.
Other Award Winners at the Ceremony
The PFA ceremony also celebrated other outstanding performers from across English football. Aston Villa’s 23-year-old forward Morgan Rogers was named Young Player of the Year, following a breakthrough season that included eight league goals and a memorable Champions League hat-trick against Celtic.
In the women’s game, Arsenal’s Mariona Caldentey won the Women’s Player of the Year award. Her nine league goals and eight Champions League strikes propelled the Gunners to continental glory, as they defeated her former club Barcelona to lift the trophy.
Liverpool’s Olivia Smith, only 21 years old, claimed the Women’s Young Player of the Year honor. Smith, who was Liverpool’s top scorer with nine goals last season, recently completed a historic transfer to Arsenal for £1 million—the first seven-figure fee paid for a female footballer in England.
Team of the Year Highlights
Salah’s dominance was further recognized with his inclusion in the PFA Premier League Team of the Year. He was joined by three Liverpool teammates: captain Virgil van Dijk, midfielder Ryan Gravenberch, and Alexis Mac Allister.
Arsenal also had strong representation, with William Saliba, Gabriel Magalhaes, and Declan Rice earning spots in the lineup. Nottingham Forest’s goalkeeper Matz Sels and striker Chris Wood were surprise inclusions, reflecting their influential roles in keeping the club competitive. Newcastle’s Alexander Isak, who finished runner-up in the Golden Boot race, rounded out the forward line.
