In the middle of heartbreaking scenes and overwhelming grief, the story of one Air India plane crash survivor is emerging as a sliver of hope in what is now India’s deadliest air disaster in ten years. The tragic incident occurred shortly after a London-bound Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner took off from Ahmedabad, claiming over 200 lives. But in the wreckage and chaos, seat 11A carried a survivor: 40-year-old Ramesh Viswashkumar.
The flight, carrying 242 people, crashed into a building near a medical college hostel minutes after takeoff at around 1:40 PM on June 12. Authorities confirmed that Viswashkumar was pulled from the debris alive, making him the first confirmed Air India plane crash survivor. His seat location and boarding pass have been verified, and he is currently receiving medical care, along with over 50 others who were injured and hospitalized.
Moments Before Impact: Air India Plane Crash Survivor Tells Story
Speaking from his hospital bed, Ramesh recounted a terrifying experience. “Just thirty seconds after take-off, I heard a loud bang. The next moment, we were on the ground. It was all so fast,” he told local media. Disoriented but conscious, he described waking up surrounded by bodies and debris. “I stood up and just ran. Someone helped me into an ambulance.”
Ramesh’s story, though miraculous, is marked by uncertainty; his brother Ajay, who was also onboard but seated in another row, remains unaccounted for. “He was travelling with me. I can’t find him. Please help,” he pleaded.
While rescue operations continue, officials suggest there might still be unidentified Air India plane crash survivors in critical condition at local hospitals. Senior police officer Vidhi Chaudhary confirmed that investigations are ongoing, and the number of survivors could change as more victims are identified.
Global Attention and Boeing’s Response
The catastrophe has sparked international reactions, with condolences pouring in and Boeing, the aircraft manufacturer, vowing support and launching its own inquiry. This is reportedly the first crash involving a Boeing 787 Dreamliner globally.
Flight AI171’s passenger list included 169 Indian nationals and others from the UK, Portugal, and Canada. Two pilots and ten crew members also perished.
