Qualcomm Confirms Cross-Platform File Sharing Coming to Wider Android Market

Qualcomm has officially announced that Android’s new cross-platform file-sharing capability with Apple’s AirDrop will not remain exclusive to Google’s Pixel 10 series. In a social media statement, the chipmaker revealed that Quick Share to AirDrop functionality will be available for Snapdragon-powered devices “in the near future.” This development promises to bring seamless file transfers between Android and Apple ecosystems to the majority of smartphones globally, given Snapdragon’s dominant market share in Android processors.

Google’s Initial Rollout and How the Feature Works

Google recently unveiled the groundbreaking feature for its Pixel 10 lineup, enabling direct file exchanges between Android’s Quick Share and Apple’s AirDrop systems. The implementation requires Apple device users to set their iPhones, iPads, or Macs to discoverable mode, after which Pixel 10 users can initiate transfers. The bidirectional functionality also allows AirDrop to detect Pixel devices when they’re in receiving mode, creating a truly interoperable experience between the competing platforms.

Widespread Adoption Expected Across Android Ecosystem

Qualcomm’s confirmation signals the feature’s imminent expansion beyond Google’s Tensor-powered Pixel devices to include popular smartphone brands like Samsung Galaxy, OnePlus, and Nothing devices – essentially any Android phone running Snapdragon chipsets. While Qualcomm hasn’t specified exact rollout timelines or device prioritization, the announcement suggests comprehensive support across smartphones and potentially tablets and laptops in future updates. This development, coupled with Apple‘s planned RCS support in iOS 18, marks significant progress in reducing long-standing interoperability barriers between Android and iOS ecosystems.
