At least 22 Palestinians were killed on Saturday during Israeli airstrikes in Gaza, according to medical sources. The Israeli military said it targeted armed militants operating from civilian shelters and aid depots.

In one of the deadliest incidents, at least 10 people lost their lives near the municipality building in Deir Al-Balah, where crowds had gathered for aid distribution. Medics said casualties were carried on foot, on rickshaws, and in private cars. Diab Ali al-Jaru, the head of Hamas’s administrative committee for central Gaza, was reported dead by Hamas sources. The mayor of Deir Al-Balah, Al-Jaru also heads the Hamas administrative committee for central Gaza and was accused by Israeli forces of assisting militants.

Four more people were killed in another airstrike in the same area, while Israeli aircraft hit targets near an aid warehouse where rockets had reportedly been fired into Israel on Friday. A separate strike on a former shelter for displaced individuals in Gaza City targeted Hamas fighters, according to the military, killing at least seven people, including a woman and her infant.

The ongoing conflict has seen an unprecedented toll on civilians, with widespread destruction and displacement in Gaza. The military stated it had taken steps to minimize civilian harm, but Palestinian medics said casualties remain overwhelming.

Another local journalist, Mohammed Baalousha, was killed in an airstrike in Gaza City. According to the Committee to Protect Journalists, at least 137 media workers have been killed since the war began. The Israeli military says it is investigating the journalist’s death.

The war began after Hamas launched an incursion into Israel on October 7, 2023, killing 1,200 civilians and taking over 250 hostages. In response, Israel launched a full-scale offensive against Gaza, killing nearly 45,000 people and causing wide-scale destruction, according to Gaza’s health authorities.

With Egypt, Qatar, and the US meditating talks, efforts to end the fight began. Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi hosted US officials on Saturday to discuss a truce and hostages for a prisoner exchange.
