The Chehlum of Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA) and the martyrs of Karbala is being observed across Pakistan today (Friday) with deep religious devotion and reverence. This day, marking the 40th day after the tragic events of Karbala, holds immense significance for millions of Muslims, particularly those belonging to the Shia community. Commemorative Processions: Traditions and Rituals

Throughout the country, cities and towns are witnessing processions featuring Alam (religious standards) and Zuljinah (symbolic representation of Imam Hussain’s horse). These processions are accompanied by the recitation of elegies (noha khwani) and matam (ritual mourning), as participants pay tribute to the enduring sacrifice made by the martyrs of Karbala. The atmosphere is marked by solemnity and unity, as mourners recall the historic events that continue to inspire courage, steadfastness, and justice.

Security Measures in Karachi

In Karachi, the central Chehlum procession is scheduled to emerge from Nishtar Park at 1 PM, moving along the traditional route on MA Jinnah Road. To ensure the safety and security of participants, comprehensive arrangements have been implemented by law enforcement agencies. Containers have been strategically placed to block adjoining streets, preventing unauthorized access and enhancing control over the procession’s route. Additionally, the Bomb Disposal Unit has conducted thorough searches and sealed markets along the route to eliminate any security risks. Over 4,000 police personnel are on ground duty, and Section 144—which prohibits public gatherings and the carrying of weapons—remains in force. Furthermore, mobile phone services will be partially suspended along the procession route as an added precaution against possible threats.

Chehlum Observance in Lahore

Lahore is also seeing significant activity as the main Chehlum procession commences from Haveli Alaf Shah, Delhi Gate, culminating at Karbala Gamay Shah. The procession traverses the historic and traditional routes, gathering thousands of mourners who participate in rituals of remembrance and solidarity. Across Punjab province, a total of 382 processions and congregations are being secured by the deployment of approximately 30,000 police officers. In Lahore alone, over 5,000 officers, led by 12 Superintendents of Police (SPs), are supervising security operations. Special attention is being given to 40 majalis (gatherings) and 12 azadari processions, with multiple layers of protection and vigilance in place to prevent any untoward incidents.

Chehlum Processions in Peshawar

Peshawar, the capital of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, will witness two major Zuljinah processions this year. One will commence from Imambargah Akhundabad at 3 PM, while the other will emerge from Jamia Masjid Kocha Risaldar at the same time. Prior to the processions, a majlis is scheduled at Imambargah Alamdar Karbala at noon, where mourners will gather to listen to sermons and pay their respects. Both processions will conclude at their respective Imambargahs under a strict security cover, reflecting the authorities’ commitment to ensuring a safe environment for religious expression and commemoration.
