In a significant development, the Senate approved a resolution on Friday advocating for a delay in the upcoming general elections scheduled for February 8, citing pressing security concerns. The resolution, presented by Senator Dilawar Khan, secured majority approval among lawmakers, despite opposition from Information Minister Murtaza Solangi and PML-N Senator Afnan Ullah.

The resolution underscored the constitutional right of every citizen to vote and emphasized the Election Commission’s responsibility to ensure free and fair polls. It particularly highlighted the challenges posed by conducting elections in colder regions during January and February, especially in Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, where participation difficulties were acknowledged.

Concerns about the safety of political leaders were raised, citing recent attempts on the lives of JUI-F chief Fazlur Rehman, former lawmaker Mohsin Dawar, and other political figures. The Ministry of Interior conveyed serious threats to the lives of prominent politicians, adding to the challenges faced by political parties. The Senate resolution pointed out a surge in attacks on security forces and citizens, particularly in KP and Balochistan, leading to the proposal for a postponement of the election schedule to address legitimate concerns and ensure effective participation.
