Ethiopian Airlines, the largest network operating carrier in Africa, is set to launch direct flights to Karachi, Pakistan from 01 May 2023. This marks the airline’s return to the city after nearly two decades. Ethiopian had previously served Karachi from July 1966 to December 1971, and later from June 1993 until July 2004.
The resumption of services to Karachi is seen as a strategic move for Ethiopian Airlines. As the most populous city in Pakistan, Karachi offers a crucial gateway to the wider South Asia region. With no other airline connecting Pakistan with Africa, the planned service is expected to strengthen diplomatic and economic relations between the two regions. The direct flight will also offer convenient air connectivity to the growing number of Pakistani investors in Africa and tourists.
Mesfin Tasew, the CEO of Ethiopian Airlines Group, expressed his excitement about returning to Karachi. He said, “As the only flight connecting Pakistan with Africa, the planned service to Karachi will have significant contribution in strengthening the diplomatic and economic relations between the two regions. It will also offer convenient air connectivity to the growing number of Pakistani investors in Africa as well as tourists.”
Karachi will become the 37th destination of Ethiopian Airlines in Asia. With over 145 domestic and international passenger and cargo destinations, the airline continues to expand its network to connect people and businesses across the world.
