With the intention of prioritizing both human health and environmental conservation, the government of Gilgit-Baltistan (GB) has taken a significant step by officially barring the usage, sale, production, and transportation of plastic bottles within the region.
This pivotal decision emerged subsequent to a high-level assembly on Thursday, led by the GB Chief Secretary and graced by prominent figures including the Inspector General and Home Secretary.
The rationale behind this move is deeply rooted in the acknowledged adverse effects of plastic bottles on human well-being and the fragile ecological equilibrium.
Acting under the authority of Section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC), an official edict has been issued to restrict the import of plastic bottles into GB from external areas, effective from the 1st of September, 2023.
To ensure the effective execution of this prohibition, explicit instructions have been circulated to all governmental bodies, affiliated departments, subsidiary offices, self-governing entities, and partially governmental organizations.
The primary objective is to discourage the presence of plastic bottles within official premises, including offices, gatherings, seminars, and workshops.
