The Punjab government has recently implemented revised school timings to address the challenges posed by the ongoing smog crisis. As air quality levels in cities like Lahore reach “hazardous” levels, schools will now operate from 8:45 AM starting October 28, 2024, and continuing through January 31, 2025. This adjustment is aimed at ensuring safer travel conditions for students and teachers during the morning hours, when smog intensity is often at its peak.
In addition to the timing change, the government has mandated that school assemblies be held indoors to protect students from exposure to polluted air. Parents are advised to equip children with protective masks and ensure they avoid outdoor activities. Schools have also been instructed to create awareness about the dangers of air pollution.
These measures coincide with other restrictions, including a temporary ban on outdoor events such as fireworks. Officials hope these steps will mitigate health risks, especially for those suffering from asthma and other respiratory conditions. Despite these efforts, Lahore continues to rank as one of the most polluted cities globally, prompting further discussions on long-term solutions to combat smog
