Internet Blackout Implemented
The federal government suspended all mobile internet services in Islamabad and Rawalpindi on Friday, citing heightened security concerns. The Ministry of Interior issued an official directive to the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA), ordering the immediate shutdown of 3G/4G networks in the twin cities until further notice.
Security Measures Escalate
Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi approved the suspension following intelligence reports warning of potential unrest. The PTA has been instructed to coordinate with local authorities, including the Islamabad and Rawalpindi Commissioner Offices, as well as regional police chiefs, to enforce the blackout.
Transport Disruptions and Road Closures
Alongside the internet shutdown, the Metro Bus service in Rawalpindi has been halted indefinitely. Major thoroughfares in both cities have been barricaded, with heavy police deployments at key locations. Traffic police have announced diversion plans to manage vehicular movement during the security lockdown.
Punjab-Wide Section 144 Enforcement
The Punjab government simultaneously imposed Section 144 province-wide for ten days, prohibiting public gatherings based on intelligence alerts about planned terrorist activities. The Home Department’s notification specifically mentioned threats from foreign-backed groups including RAW, TTP, and BLA, as well as risks of politically or religiously motivated protests disrupting public order.
Preemptive Measures Against Planned Protest
This security clampdown follows Rawalpindi’s earlier imposition of Section 144 for four days to prevent TLP’s “Aqsa March” – a demonstration targeting the US Embassy in protest against American support for Israel’s Gaza operations. The ban includes prohibitions on pillion riding and all forms of public assemblies.
