In response to the violent incidents involving Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) supporters on 9 May, 2023, the federal government has established a cabinet committee dedicated to investigating the events. The caretaker federal law and justice minister have been appointed as the convener, with other members including ministers of interior, information, and human rights. There is a possibility of adding a new member to the committee to address any arising issues.

The committee is mandated to meticulously examine the events leading up to 9 May, aiming to identify the masterminds, planners, facilitators, and executors of the violence. The terms of reference (TORs) include analyzing the root causes, determining responsibility, and evaluating both immediate and long-term implications. Furthermore, the committee is tasked with suggesting preventive measures and recommending strengthening the legal regime to prevent such incidents from occurring in the future.

To ensure a comprehensive investigation, the Ministry of Interior will provide secretarial support to the committee. A strict timeline has been set, requiring the committee to submit its detailed report to the cabinet within fourteen days.

The violent clashes erupted nationwide after the arrest of PTI founder Imran Khan on May 9, 2023, leading to protests in various cities as PTI workers expressed agitation over their chairman’s detention. In response, Balochistan, Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Islamabad summoned armed forces to maintain law and order.

The committee’s primary focus is to investigate and identify those responsible for the violence, placing particular emphasis on understanding the causes and implications of the events on May 9. The proactive stance of recommending preventive measures reflects the government’s commitment to avoiding future breaches of national security, highlighting the broader context of nationwide unrest sparked by Imran Khan’s arrest and subsequent protests.
