Hamas has accused Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of plotting against the finalization processes for the truce and a hostage exchange deal in Gaza. Hamas further claimed that such actions by Netanyahu expose the hostages to danger. The allegations come after two days of mediation talks in Doha where US, Egyptian, and Qatari mediators have been involved.
Israeli Prime Minister Behind Blocking Gaza Truce
Friday, the United States reportedly presented a new compromise proposal in hopes of satisfying Netanyahu’s concerns. Hamas has come forth to indicate that already, Netanyahu has rejected major tenets of the proposal, especially a permanent ceasefire. The Israeli leader has also demanded that Israeli forces stay in certain strategic positions, including the Netzarim junction, the Rafah crossing, and the Philadelphi corridor. These are major positions from where Israel can ensure no weapons get into Gaza.
Hamas has accused Netanyahu of constantly retreating from previously agreed terms, delaying the hostage exchange. The group also welcomed a proposal submitted last May by US President Joe Biden for a three-phase deal that would include a six-week truce, the releasing of the hostages taken on October 7, and an Israeli withdrawal from densely populated areas of Gaza.
The situation is still very tense, as international mediators are still trying to squeeze out a resolution. But so far, the conflict rages on within Gaza, and Hamas says Netanyahu’s extra demands are the main stumbling block to peace.
