A team from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) is scheduled to meet with Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan today to seek the party’s support regarding the standby agreement. Hammad Azhar, from PTI’s economic team, confirmed this development, stating that the IMF has approached the party to garner their backing for the $3 billion agreement and its broader objectives.
The meeting between the IMF team and Imran Khan will take place at Zaman Park, with representatives from both PTI’s economic team and the IMF participating in the discussions, both in person and virtually.
In a separate statement, IMF’s resident representative for Pakistan, Esther Perez Ruiz, mentioned that the IMF staff is currently meeting with representatives of major political parties in Pakistan, including PML-N, PPP, and PTI. The purpose of these meetings is to seek assurances of support for the key objectives and policies of a new IMF-supported program, particularly in light of the upcoming national elections.
It should be noted that the IMF Executive Board is scheduled to convene on July 12 to approve the initial disbursement of $1.1 billion for Pakistan under the standby agreement.
Furthermore, the IMF team also met with the finance team of the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), and a photograph of the meeting was shared by Federal Minister for Commerce Syed Naveed Qamar. Qamar stated that PPP has agreed to support the program in the larger national interest.
These interactions with major political parties in Pakistan indicate the IMF’s efforts to secure broader political support for their proposed program and policies, as they play a crucial role in the country’s economic stability and growth.
