Tabla maestro Zakir Hussain, the global icon of Indian classical music, died on Sunday. The legendary percussionist, known for his virtuosity and innovation, died due to heart and lung ailments in the United States. Hussain was 73 years old and had been critically ill for two weeks.
Hussain, son of tabla maestro Ustad Allah Rakha, will live on in the annals of history. A Grammy Award winner thrice over, he was an exemplar of innovation in partnerships and a master craftsman. His contributions to the Indian classical music arena found no bounds, as his artistry enthralled audiences all across the globe.
Earlier this year, Hussain was awarded the Ustad Ghulam Mustafa Khan Award, which acknowledged his great talent and contribution to the music world. Despite his illustrious career, Hussain remained a lifelong learner, constantly seeking inspiration from younger musicians. In an interview, he emphasized the importance of continuous learning, stating, “Being a student and having a drive to learn keeps me going.”
