Seismic Activity Intensifies in Karachi

Karachi has experienced a series of 16 minor earthquakes since Sunday, as confirmed by the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD). The most recent tremor occurred at 9:57 AM on Tuesday, registering a magnitude of 2.8. The epicenter was located northeast of Malir, approximately 15 kilometers from the area, at a depth of 40 kilometers .

Earlier, two back-to-back tremors were recorded late Monday night—the first at midnight with a magnitude of 2.6 and the second at 12:23 AM measuring 2.8. Both had a depth of 40 kilometers and were centered northeast of Malir. A third tremor occurred at 6:42 AM Tuesday with a magnitude of 3.2 and a shallower depth of 11 kilometers, near Korangi .

Landhi Fault Region Identified as Primary Source

Chief Meteorologist Aamir Haider attributed the series of quakes to the Landhi Fault Region, a seismically active zone that typically generates low-intensity tremors. He noted that while this region is not known for producing major earthquakes, such aftershocks may continue in the coming days. Additionally, another fault line near Thana Bula Khan contributes to the overall seismic activity in and around Karachi .

Residents Express Concern Amid Ongoing Tremors

The repeated mild tremors have been felt in Karachi’s Landhi, Quaidabad, Malir, and surrounding neighborhoods, raising concerns among residents. Many have reported feeling anxious and uncertain about the ongoing seismic activity. Despite the frequency of the tremors, no significant damage or injuries have been reported .

Malir Jail Incident Highlights Infrastructure Vulnerabilities

The seismic activity had significant implications beyond public concern. Late Monday night, a series of low-intensity earthquakes caused structural damage to Karachi’s Malir Jail, leading to a mass escape of inmates. The tremors instilled panic among inmates and correctional officers, enabling dozens of prisoners to escape amidst the chaos. By Tuesday morning, authorities had recaptured 46 of the escaped individuals, while efforts to apprehend the remaining fugitives continued .

Experts Warn of Karachi’s Preparedness for Major Quakes

While the recent tremors have been minor, experts have raised concerns about Karachi’s preparedness for more significant seismic events. They warn that the city’s infrastructure may not withstand a major earthquake, emphasizing the need for improved building codes and emergency response plans. Although the current tremors are expected to subside in a day or two, the situation underscores the importance of proactive measures to enhance the city’s resilience to potential future quakes .
