Major Public Transport Upgrade Launches Next Week
Karachi is poised to revolutionize its urban mobility with the introduction of double-decker and electric buses starting next week. The Sindh government’s ambitious initiative, announced by Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon, represents the largest modernization of the city’s public transport network in decades. These new vehicles will operate under the People’s Bus Service program across major urban routes, offering residents cleaner, more efficient commuting alternatives to the city’s aging transport fleet.
Comprehensive Sustainable Transport Plan Unveiled
The transport overhaul includes multiple components designed to address Karachi’s mobility challenges. Alongside the new buses, officials confirmed plans to launch an electric vehicle (EV) taxi service by December 2025. The Transport and Mass Transit Department revealed that 500 additional buses will join the fleet during the current financial year, with the first batch arriving within seven days. Representatives from Karachi’s ongoing Yellow Line and Red Line Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) projects participated in the announcement, signaling coordinated development of the city’s mass transit infrastructure.
Eco-Friendly Solutions for Urban Congestion
The electric buses and forthcoming EV taxis mark Karachi’s first major foray into sustainable public transportation. The double-decker models will provide much-needed capacity on high-demand routes, while the zero-emission vehicles align with global urban sustainability trends. This initiative positions Karachi alongside other progressive cities adopting green transport solutions, potentially serving as a model for other Pakistani urban centers grappling with similar congestion and pollution challenges.
