Lahore Welcomes Pakistan’s First Solar-Powered, Trackless Metro System

A New Era of Public Transport in Lahore

Pakistan is embracing futuristic urban mobility with the introduction of its first trackless, ticketless, and solar-powered metro system in Lahore. The Super Autonomous Rail Rapid Transit (SRT) System marks a transformative leap in the country’s public transportation infrastructure.

Unlike conventional metros, the SRT operates on existing roads, utilizing Virtual Track Technology rather than steel rails. This allows for a highly adaptable and cost-effective alternative to traditional rail systems, with minimal disruption to city landscapes.

Advanced Tech Behind the System

Powered entirely by electricity and supported by solar energy, the SRT vehicle is guided by a combination of sensors, GPS, and digital mapping to maintain its path. This smart navigation removes the need for human drivers and traditional physical rail lines.

A pilot project has already been initiated near Lahore Airport to evaluate the vehicle’s performance in urban conditions. The system’s debut was marked by a launch event attended by senior officials from both Pakistan and China, underlining the collaborative effort behind this innovation.

The SRT system is already operational in countries such as China, Malaysia, the UAE, and Türkiye, and now Pakistan joins the list of adopters of this advanced transport technology.

By eliminating the need for expensive infrastructure like rail tracks and stations, the system offers a scalable model suitable for densely populated cities. It not only reduces construction costs but also addresses pressing environmental concerns by promoting clean energy.

Potential for Nationwide Expansion

If successful, the project could serve as a blueprint for smart transit solutions across other major Pakistani cities, addressing traffic congestion and pollution simultaneously.

In contrast, conventional projects like Karachi’s Red Line BRT continue to face delays. Sindh Transport Minister Sharjeel Memon recently admitted the project may not be completed before 2026 due to utility transfer challenges, drawing public criticism.
