The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has approved the nomination papers of prominent political figures Nawaz Sharif, Maryam Nawaz, and Asif Ali Zardari for the upcoming general elections in 2024. Former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif’s papers for NA 130 (Lahore) were accepted without objections, ensuring his candidacy in the constituency.

Maryam Nawaz’s nomination papers have been approved for a provincial constituency, although objections were raised for the National Assembly seat. Asif Ali Zardari’s papers were accepted for NA 207 (Nawabshah), securing his candidacy in the electoral race.

However, the ECP rejected the nomination papers of several Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leaders, including Yasmin Rashid, Hammad Azhar, Asad Qaiser, Shehram Tarakai, Ali Muhammad Khan, and Qasim Khan Suri. The ongoing scrutiny of nomination papers will continue until December 30, providing a comprehensive review of candidates’ eligibility.

Candidates have the option to file appeals against the acceptance or rejection of nomination papers until January 3. The ECP is set to make decisions on appeals by January 10. The official list of candidates will be displayed on January 11, and candidates can withdraw their nominations by January 12. Electoral symbols, crucial for voter identification, will be allotted on January 13, leading up to the scheduled polling day on February 8.
