DRAP Initiates Nationwide Crackdown on Illegal Drugs

The Drug Regulatory Authority of Pakistan (DRAP) has intensified its efforts to combat the distribution of illegal and counterfeit medicines across the country. The crackdown, launched under directives from federal authorities, is targeting major cities like Karachi, Lahore, and Islamabad to ensure public safety by removing substandard and unregistered drugs from the market.

Inspections of pharmacies and medical stores have revealed several violations, such as the sale of overpriced or unapproved medicines. For example, Heparin injections were reportedly being sold for over four times their approved price. Additionally, DRAP has confiscated counterfeit medicines from an illegal factory in Karachi that was manufacturing and packaging fake antibiotic drugs under reputable brand names. This action underscores the severity of the threat posed by these unsafe products, which can lead to severe health risks and even fatalities.

Provincial teams have been mobilized to conduct raids and inspect pharmaceutical markets, with particular focus on ensuring compliance with drug quality standards. Legal actions are being pursued against violators under the DRAP Act, and nationwide surveillance of pharmaceutical supply chains continues to be a priority. Authorities have issued red alerts for certain batches of medicines that were found to be substandard or dangerous

New Petrol Prices Announced for Pakistan: November 2024

The Government of Pakistan has announced that fuel prices, including petrol and diesel, will remain unchanged for the next fortnight starting November 16, 2024. This decision follows a prior increase during the last fortnight. Here’s an overview of the current rates:

  • Petrol: The price remains at PKR 248.38 per liter, following a previous rise of PKR 1.35 per liter.
  • High-Speed Diesel (HSD): Unchanged at PKR 255.14 per liter, after an increase of PKR 3.85 earlier.
  • Kerosene Oil: Price holds steady at PKR 161.54 per liter, after a reduction of PKR 1.48 last month.
  • Light Diesel Oil (LDO): Remains at PKR 147.51 per liter, following a cut of PKR 2.61.

The Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA) determines prices based on global crude oil trends. The decision to keep these prices stable provides some predictability for consumers, especially amid inflationary pressures impacting transportation and household budgets. However, increases in past months have already strained middle- and lower-income groups, who rely heavily on petrol for personal and public transport

HEC Shuts Down Universities, Colleges Amid Severe Smog

The Higher Education Commission (HEC) has directed the closure of universities and colleges in several parts of Punjab due to the worsening smog crisis. Lahore and nearby cities like Gujranwala and Faisalabad are experiencing hazardous air quality levels, with the Air Quality Index (AQI) frequently exceeding safe limits. This alarming situation has prompted authorities to implement emergency measures to safeguard public health.

The smog, primarily caused by industrial emissions, vehicle exhaust, and crop residue burning, is creating severe respiratory and cardiac health concerns. Hospitals in Lahore report a surge in patients with breathing difficulties, especially among children and the elderly. In response, educational institutions are switching to online classes in affected areas to minimize students’ exposure to toxic air

Additionally, measures such as traffic restrictions, increased street watering, and discussions around implementing artificial rain have been announced. The Punjab government is also exploring the distribution of electric bikes to students as a long-term solution to reduce vehicular pollution

Those Resorting to Protest Won’t Succeed, Says Nawaz Sharif

Former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif recently made strong remarks against political groups resorting to protests, emphasizing that such tactics hinder national progress. In his statements, he particularly criticized the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), holding it responsible for political instability and disruption during his governance. Sharif questioned PTI’s failure to deliver on its ambitious promises, such as creating millions of jobs and building homes, labeling their track record as lacking in tangible results

Sharif highlighted his tenure’s developmental achievements, such as infrastructure projects and efforts to stabilize the economy, contrasting them with what he termed as the opposition’s focus on protests and divisive politics. He expressed frustration over the lack of public resistance during his political disqualifications, noting that strong nations stand against perceived injustices

As protests continue in Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Sharif reiterated that constructive politics, rather than street agitation, is essential for Pakistan’s progress. His remarks come as various parties debate their political strategies amid ongoing governance challenges

Constructive Talks Held with Pakistani Officials, Says IMF

Recent discussions between the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and Pakistani authorities have been described as constructive, focusing on economic stability and reform. Held in November 2024, the talks emphasized adhering to the $7 billion Extended Fund Facility (EFF), which aims to strengthen Pakistan’s economy through structural reforms and fiscal discipline.

The IMF praised Pakistan’s efforts in areas like energy sector reform and tax base expansion, critical for economic growth. It highlighted the importance of shifting social and development responsibilities to provincial governments to enhance efficiency. The talks also addressed the role of the private sector in driving growth, stressing the reduction of state intervention in the economy.

The IMF commended progress made under Pakistan’s previous agreements, including curbing inflation and rebuilding foreign exchange reserves. However, it underscored the need for sustained efforts in governance, tax reform, and infrastructure investment. A follow-up visit by IMF representatives is planned for early 2025 to assess further progress and challenges

ICC Cancels Champions Trophy 2025 Tour in Key Cities

The ICC has faced significant challenges surrounding the 2025 Champions Trophy, leading to cancellations and modifications in its promotional events. Initially scheduled for February to March in Pakistan, the tournament has encountered logistical and political roadblocks. India’s refusal to participate in Pakistan due to security concerns and lack of governmental clearance has been a major stumbling block. As a result, the ICC canceled key events, such as the 100-day countdown launch, initially planned for Lahore, citing scheduling uncertainties and local issues like severe pollution in the city

Efforts are being made to resolve the situation, including discussions about a “hybrid model.” This could involve relocating India’s games to neutral venues like Dubai or Abu Dhabi, mirroring arrangements made during the 2023 Asia Cup. Primary host cities for the tournament in Pakistan—Lahore, Karachi, and Rawalpindi—may also undergo changes to adapt to evolving conditions

The PCB has expressed readiness to cooperate with the ICC but has yet to receive formal requests regarding these alterations. Stakeholders are working to ensure the event proceeds without compromising its integrity or international participation

Dubai Family Visa: Requirements for Pakistani Sponsors

Pakistani expatriates looking to sponsor their families for residence in Dubai must meet specific criteria established by the UAE government. The requirements vary depending on whom they intend to sponsor—spouse, children, or parents.

Minimum Salary Requirements

The sponsor must have a minimum salary of AED 4,000 or AED 3,000 plus accommodation. Income thresholds can differ slightly by emirate and for sponsoring parents, a higher salary requirement typically applies. This ensures sponsors have adequate financial means to support their dependents.

Eligible Dependents

Male children can now be sponsored until the age of 25, provided they are pursuing education or are unemployed. Unmarried daughters have no age restriction for sponsorship. Special permissions are also granted for disabled children. Parents can be sponsored with proof of financial stability and a commitment to provide health insurance.

Required Documents

To apply, sponsors must submit:

  • A completed visa application form (online or through a typing center).
  • Passport copies and recent photographs of dependents.
  • An attested marriage certificate for spouses.
  • Educational certificates or proof of dependency for children.
  • A salary certificate or labor contract for the sponsor. Additionally, medical fitness tests and Emirates ID applications are mandatory for dependents aged 18 and above.

Application and Costs

The visa application process includes multiple steps, such as securing an entry permit, completing medical tests, and obtaining health insurance. Costs range between AED 300 and AED 3,000, depending on the type of visa and number of applicants. The process typically takes up to 60 days for completion.

These policies reflect Dubai’s ongoing efforts to support family reunification for its expatriate population while ensuring financial and social stability within families residing in the UAE.

In-laws brutally murder pregnant daughter-in-law, burn her head, chop her body into pieces for Rs 15,000

In Daska, a horrific incident was witnessed in which a woman, in league with her daughter and two male relatives, brutally murdered her seven-month pregnant daughter-in-law, Zehra. The motive behind the ghastly crime of the four was revealed by the main accused, Sughra Bibi, as a twisted obsession with Indian films.

The murderers, after planning the murder very effectively, broke up the body of Zehra, burnt her head to erase the identity of the victim, and threw the remains in a canal. The police were confused right from the very beginning due to the false claims given by the murderers about Zehra eloping. They did a detailed inquiry that exposed the gruesome truth.

According to Sialkot DPO Rana Umar Farooq, the case has been lodged on a complaint lodged by Zehra’s father. The suspects are Sughra Bibi, daughter Yasmeen, and their male accomplices Abdullah and Naveed, all of whom were arrested.

The violent stuff from the media is no less shockingly wrong influence on children’s minds, and this incident becomes a wake-up call for much stiffer rules in place over such content.

Champions Trophy 2025: ICC requests ‘written letter’ with solid reasons from BCCI for not visiting Pakistan

According to the communique released from Dubai, the International Cricket Council has requested the Board of Control for Cricket in India to explain the reasons that restrained its team from coming to Pakistan to play for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 since that country will host it for the first time in more than two decades next February.

As per the policy of the ICC, the BCCI would have to justify its action of withdrawing from the eight-team competition. In case the reason cited by the BCCI is not good enough for the ICC council, then it has all the rights to let India participate in the tournament. The ninth-ranked team could replace India, state insiders, if the reasons cited by the board are valid.

India’s departure from the Champions Trophy may be a situation where ICC may incur losses running into hundreds of millions of dollars in direct revenue loss. This includes broadcasting rights and sponsorship deals besides advertising losses. Besides, this highly sought-after Pakistan-India match that will not happen, is expected to cost BCCI $100 million more.

Champions Trophy 2025 Tour Kicks Off in Doubtful Conditions

Ironically, India’s participation in the trophy tour despite all the uncertainty surrounding their participation is going to start on 16 November. The silverware from Dubai to Islamabad will make a nine-day journey. It will start in Skardu and be taken to the K2 base camp and big host cities like Karachi, Lahore, and Rawalpindi.

It will be the first ICC trophy tour and will take place even before the official release of the schedule, which is typically released four months prior to an event. This, in itself, speaks volumes as to how important this tournament will be for Pakistan and the ICC.

While the ICC is pondering over a response by the BCCI, the cricketing world is on its toes for clear indications about Champions Trophy 2025. A decision will not only decide the future prospects of the tournament but would also turn it on its feet in terms of financial aspects.

ICC Champions Trophy 2025 tour set to take place despite venue uncertainty

Despite the ongoing uncertainty surrounding the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, there is a much-awaited trophy tour still set to commence on November 16. Silverware that has been brought into Islamabad this week from Dubai will be showcased around Pakistan.

The nine-day ICC Champions Trophy 2025 Tour will begin in Skardu and progress to the famous K2 base camp. The tour will also pass through important cities hosting the tournament including Karachi, Lahore, and Rawalpindi. This is the first time an ICC trophy tour will take place even before the actual tournament schedule is known.

Traditionally, the PCB unveils a schedule four months before the event starts. This year, however, it has reportedly been pushing back its announcement. Broadcasters are allegedly applying pressure on the governing body to release the schedule immediately. Broadcasters bank on major Pakistan-India matches for high ratings and revenues.

The backlog is a consequence of the Board of Control for Cricket in India’s reluctance to commit and put itself in a tight spot. The ICC Champions Trophy 2025 Trophy Tour is on schedule, but the war of words still wages on as Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) officials opposed the hybrid model that was presented to them earlier this year.

The schedule, yet to be finalised, has broadcasters on tenterhooks fearing a heavy loss if this situation continues for much longer. And now, the ICC finds itself entrapped between the influence exerted by the BCCI and the demands of the PCB. While the trophy tour tries to create buzz among fans, stakeholders demand clarity over the tournament’s timeline.

The ICC Champions Trophy 2025 Trophy Tour is a symbolic gesture of progress, but how the resolution of all these issues will happen remains uncertain.

Court Rejects Bushra Bibi’s Plea for Acquittal in Toshakhana-II Case

A court in Rawalpindi recently denied the acquittal plea of Bushra Bibi, spouse of PTI founder Imran Khan, in the Toshakhana-II case, a legal controversy surrounding alleged misappropriations from the Toshakhana, the state gift repository. This decision follows months of legal proceedings wherein the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) has pursued charges against both Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi, accusing them of obtaining valuable items improperly from the Toshakhana

The Toshakhana-II case specifically centers on a high-value jewelry set said to have been acquired unlawfully. Both Bushra Bibi and Imran Khan have consistently sought acquittals, asserting their innocence and challenging the accusations through their legal teams. The court, however, has maintained the charges, thus prolonging the high-profile legal struggle involving the former prime minister and his wife

This ruling intensifies the legal difficulties faced by PTI leadership and highlights the ongoing scrutiny over the accountability of political figures in Pakistan.

Bitcoin rises above $90,000 in first week of Trump’s presidency

Bitcoin’s rally simply doesn’t seem to be slowing down; it has catapulted to new heights reaching $93,158 on Wednesday. The world’s leading cryptocurrency has risen 32 per cent since the November 5 U.S. election. Mainly, a Donald Trump presidency is expected to bring a welcome boost to cryptocurrency.

Since the election, the asset that has been talked about the most is Bitcoin, whose price has hit record highs. While that’s the story du jour, smaller cryptos such as ether have also joined the party and are up 37% since election day. Even volatile dogecoin, supported by Trump ally Elon Musk, has gained more than 150%.

The pro-crypto stance of the president, Donald Trump, has emerged as one of the most vital factors behind this crypto boom. In his election campaign, Trump promised to turn the U.S. into the “crypto capital of the planet,” and stated an interest in a national Bitcoin reserve. Since details about such ventures are unclear, speculation ripples throughout. More and more people are showing interest in crypto mining and the stocks associated with cryptos are taking off.

Bitcoin is expected to rise further

Carl Szantyr, managing partner at Blockstone Capital also opined the political landscape could bring about clarity for the regulatory environment for digital assets. He went on to list strategic developments that could progress through this very scenario such as creating a national Bitcoin reserve and further growth in the mining sector.

MicroStrategy, a software company and a major buyer of Bitcoins, reported purchasing approximately $2 billion in Bitcoin from October 31 through November 10, sending the company’s shares to an all-time high. Investors also believe that when Trump is re-elected, he will provide even less scrutiny to the SEC. The SEC had been very aggressive towards crypto in the past.

But with steady growth on the side of Bitcoin, many are keen to see if a lot of regulatory movement and a change in the crypto industry would be there under a potential Trump presidency.”

Rawalpindi’s Crackdown on Smog: Industrial Units and Brick Kilns Closed

As smog continues to affect air quality across Pakistan, the Rawalpindi district administration has taken drastic measures, sealing several industrial units and brick kilns found to be major contributors to pollution. With air quality becoming a public health crisis in many parts of Punjab, authorities are cracking down on sources of emissions to mitigate the worsening situation.

The administration’s crackdown comes amid a broader provincial effort to reduce smog, particularly during winter months when pollution levels spike due to weather conditions. Industrial units and brick kilns, which release significant particulate matter and other pollutants, are required to adopt cleaner technology or face closure. This year, authorities have implemented stricter regulations, closely monitoring compliance to minimize smog’s impact on residents.

Citizens have voiced their support for these actions, although some argue for a balanced approach that considers the economic implications for workers in these sectors. Environmental experts emphasize the need for sustainable practices and urge investment in green technologies for industry. Moreover, they advocate for public awareness campaigns to highlight the health risks associated with poor air quality.

The decisive action taken by the Rawalpindi administration underscores a growing commitment to environmental health and demonstrates the urgency of addressing air pollution in Pakistan. This effort marks a critical step toward cleaner air and a healthier future for the residents of Rawalpindi and beyond.

Donald Trump’s Surprising Choice: Elon Musk to Oversee Government Efficiency

In a surprising development, former U.S. President Donald Trump has announced his intention to appoint tech mogul Elon Musk to lead a proposed government efficiency department. This choice has sparked discussions in Pakistan and across the globe, given Musk’s unconventional approach to business and his success with companies like Tesla and SpaceX.

Pakistani tech enthusiasts and entrepreneurs are particularly interested in the news, as Musk’s influence on a U.S. government role could inspire similar innovation-focused reforms in other countries, including Pakistan. Musk’s reputation for reshaping industries might bring a transformative vision to the department, introducing more efficient, tech-driven solutions to government operations.

Moreover, this development highlights the increasing relevance of technology in governance, a trend that could inspire Pakistan’s own digital transformation. Observers believe that if Musk’s strategies prove effective, Pakistan could explore similar roles for tech leaders in governmental positions, improving efficiency and transparency.

For Pakistan, the appointment signifies a potential shift in how governments worldwide may look to the private sector for innovative solutions. It serves as a point of reflection for Pakistan’s policymakers about how similar figures could contribute to advancements within the country’s own administrative structures.

PM Shehbaz Sharif and Denmark’s Commitment to Bilateral Cooperation

Pakistan and Denmark are poised to strengthen bilateral cooperation following recent discussions between Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and the Danish Prime Minister. This partnership aims to enhance diplomatic ties and economic collaboration, with both leaders agreeing to prioritize areas like trade, climate action, and sustainable energy solutions.

Pakistan’s government sees this collaboration as an opportunity to benefit from Denmark’s expertise in clean and green technology, aligning with Pakistan’s initiatives to combat climate change. In the energy sector, both countries are exploring joint ventures that could bring Danish renewable energy solutions to Pakistan, potentially easing the energy crisis while advancing Pakistan’s environmental goals.

Trade is another focal point of this partnership, with a potential increase in imports and exports between the two countries. Denmark has shown particular interest in Pakistan’s textile and agricultural sectors, while Pakistan is keen to attract Danish investment in technology and infrastructure. Through these mutual interests, the governments are working toward agreements that will not only enhance economic growth but also foster long-term collaboration.

This engagement reflects a growing trend of Pakistan expanding its alliances with European nations, bringing new opportunities for development and stability. The strengthened ties with Denmark hold the promise of substantial progress across sectors critical to Pakistan’s economy and environment.
