Paetongtarn Shinawatra Becomes Thailand’s Youngest Prime Minister, Carrying on Her Family’s Political Legacy

Thailand is set to witness the rise of its youngest-ever prime minister, Paetongtarn Shinawatra, marking a significant moment in the country’s political history. At just 37 years old, Paetongtarn, the daughter of former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra, is stepping into the office that both her father and aunt, Yingluck Shinawatra, once held. Her ascension to power underscores the enduring influence of the Shinawatra family in Thai politics, despite years of political turbulence and military interventions.

Paetongtarn’s journey to the premiership has been anything but typical. Her entry into the political arena came last year when she campaigned across rural Thailand for the Pheu Thai party. Despite being visibly pregnant during her campaign trail, she demonstrated resilience and commitment to her family’s political cause. The Pheu Thai party, although securing only second place in the 2023 elections, managed to form a ruling coalition after the vote-winning party was blocked by military-backed lawmakers. This strategic maneuvering paved the way for Paetongtarn’s eventual rise to the top office.

Her rise to power was accelerated when Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin was dismissed by a court order, leaving a leadership vacuum that Paetongtarn was quick to fill. With the backing of her party and coalition partners, she secured the necessary parliamentary support to become Thailand’s youngest prime minister and only the second woman to hold the position, following in the footsteps of her aunt Yingluck.

Despite her lack of administrative experience, Paetongtarn’s appointment is seen as a continuation of the Shinawatra legacy. Her father, Thaksin Shinawatra, is one of Thailand’s most polarizing political figures, known for his populist policies that won him widespread support among the rural poor. Thaksin’s governments, however, were twice overthrown by military coups, first in 2006 and then again in 2014 during Yingluck’s tenure. These events have left deep scars in Thai politics, and Paetongtarn’s government will undoubtedly face scrutiny from both allies and opponents.

Paetongtarn’s ascent also comes at a time of significant political division in Thailand. The alliance between her Pheu Thai party and military-backed parties, which have historically been at odds, is a testament to the complex and often contradictory nature of Thai politics. The coalition’s formation represents a pragmatic approach to governance, but it also highlights the enduring tensions between Thailand’s populist and conservative-royalist factions.

For Paetongtarn, the challenge lies not only in governing but also in stepping out of her father’s shadow. She has openly acknowledged the influence her father has had on her life and career, stating, “I consult with my father on all issues, whether on private matters or about work, since I was young. He has done this before. He was a prime minister.” However, to succeed as a leader in her own right, Paetongtarn will need to navigate the complexities of Thai politics with a deft hand, balancing her family’s legacy with the demands of a nation seeking stability and progress.

As she prepares to take on this monumental role, Paetongtarn Shinawatra’s journey serves as a reminder of the resilience and adaptability of the Shinawatra dynasty. Her story is not just about political power but also about the enduring influence of a family that has shaped Thailand’s modern political landscape for over two decades.

Mawra Hocane Hints at Dream Wedding Venue in Australia 2024

Pakistani actor Mawra Hocane has taken a significant step toward her future wedding by finalizing her dream venue, sparking excitement among her fans. The star, known for her roles in both Pakistani dramas and Bollywood films, recently hinted that her wedding might take place in Australia, a destination that holds a special place in her heart.

In a playful Instagram story, the 31-year-old actor shared her excitement about finding the perfect location for her big day. Reposting a friend’s story, which featured a picturesque shot of the famous ‘The Grounds of Alexandria’ in Sydney, Mawra cheekily captioned it, “I do I do I do! Wedding venue finalized,” adding humorously, “We’re all set… Only need to find the groom now.”

The Grounds of Alexandria is one of Sydney’s most sought-after venues, known for its rustic charm, beautiful gardens, and iconic laneways. It’s a favorite spot for couples looking to tie the knot in an enchanting, storybook-like setting. Mawra’s choice of venue aligns perfectly with her elegant and romantic persona, making it easy to imagine her walking down the aisle in this dreamy location.

However, while the venue might be decided, Mawra has made it clear that marriage is not on the immediate horizon. Earlier this year, she addressed the swirling rumors about her wedding plans, firmly stating that she has no plans to get married in 2024. In a caption on Instagram, she wrote, “NOOOO it’s not my wedding…not now, not next week, not next month, not this year.”

Mawra Hocane has built a solid reputation as one of Pakistan’s most talented and versatile actors. Her performances in hit dramas like ‘Main Gunehgar Nahi’, ‘Mere Harjai’, and ‘Main Bushra’ have garnered her a massive fan base. Additionally, her role in the blockbuster film ‘Jawani Phir Nahi Aani 2’ and her Bollywood debut in ‘Sanam Teri Kasam’ further solidified her status as a leading lady in the entertainment industry.

Despite her busy career, Mawra’s fans have been eagerly speculating about her love life, with many wondering who the lucky groom might be. The actor’s latest revelation about her dream wedding venue has only fueled the curiosity, leaving everyone guessing who will eventually sweep her off her feet.

For now, Mawra seems content enjoying her time with family and focusing on her career. Her recent trip to Australia, where she spent quality time with her brother and sister-in-law, appears to have played a role in her venue decision. As she continues to delight fans with her work on screen, they’ll just have to wait patiently to see who she ultimately chooses to share her special day with.

Israel Settlers Attack Palestinian Village in West Bank

What has been described as one of the most violent incidents in recent months saw more than 100 extremist Israeli settlers attack Palestinian village of Jit, west of Nablus in the West Bank. It happened late in the evening and left at least one Palestinian dead and several others seriously injured.

The attackers, masked youths mostly, used Molotov cocktails, rifles, and stones to inflict maximum damage. Houses and cars were set alight. According to videos on social media, dramatic scenes of cars and houses on fire were variously captured. The Palestinian health ministry identified the deceased as 23-year-old Rashid Sada. Another civilian was critically wounded by gunfire during the assault.

While Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has come out to condemn the attack, he is reportedly less than keen on actually preventing such violence. Many even believe his actions have directly or indirectly enabled these attacks to take place regularly in Palestine.

The White House responded to the violence with condemnation, labeling it “unacceptable” and appealing to the Israeli authorities to ensure that all communities are protected. But this apparent hypocrisy is lost on nobody, especially given the fact that the U.S. administration is pro-Israel, continuing to support it despite such continuing violence against Palestinians.

The Israeli military responded and detained one Israeli settler, the Israeli military said which seems to be a fake news to gain sympathy. Palestinians often accuse Israeli security forces of standing by during such attacks. Many social media posts are now showing the violence in real-time. This incident is gaining huge international attention and calling for accountability and greater scrutiny on how Israel is handling settler violence.

This attack is merely the tip of the iceberg in an emerging pattern of intensifying violence by Israeli settlers in the West Bank, which has left Palestinians increasingly unsafe and brought to the fore the deepening crisis in the region.

Watch: Lost wreck of WW1 warship found in good condition

A long-lost Royal Navy WW1 warship, HMS Hawke, has been discovered off the coast of Aberdeenshire, 70 miles east of Fraserburgh. Sunk by a German U-boat during World War One, it has been found in remarkable condition resting 360 feet below the surface.

HMS Hawke met its tragic end in October 1914 when a torpedo from the German submarine U-9 struck her. In this attack, the ship went down in less than eight minutes, and over 500 crew members were killed. Seventy men survived the sinking.

The wreckage was found by the Scottish shipwreck site location team Lost in Waters Deep, whose leader diver Steve Mortimer, using historical records like those made by the U-boat commander and the Royal Navy in their logs, found the remains. It was an “obstruction” reported by Scottish fisheries in the 1980s that set them in the right direction.

HMS Hawke was an Edgar-class protected cruiser, launched in 1891 with a service record that included an assignment to the 10th Cruiser Squadron that was patrolling off the Shetlands to Norway when, in 1911, it collided with RMS Olympic, the sister ship to the Titanic.

The structure is remarkably well preserved, even though it lies here for over a century, with an existing teak decking, guns, and even Royal Navy crockery. Open portholes show that the attack came as a surprise to the crew. Poor nutrient levels of the waters have probably helped conservation of the wreck, which is very valuable in historical terms.

WW1 Warship HMS Hawke’s Wreck Found

The Royal Navy is to check the wreck within weeks, confirming this great new find as HMS Hawke.

Russia-Ukraine War Update: Civilians Urged to Evacuate as Russian Forces Advance

Russia-Ukraine war update: Situation in eastern Ukraine getting dangerous as the military tells people to leave the town of Pokrovsk as quickly as possible. The Russian army getting closer toward Pokrovsk makes it one of the main targets.

The Ukrainian military is doing something very risky yet courageous: hitting Russia, namely the Kursk region. The stakes of a war potentially getting more dangerous for Ukraine could be increased by it. The assault began on August 6 and might turn the way of conducting the war. At the same time, it makes Ukraine’s defenses weak, especially in the east where Russia is strong.

For months now, Russian forces have been doing well in the Donetsk region, one of the most critical locations in the Russia-Ukraine war. Evacuation at Pokrovsk is becoming urgent every passing day as officials are warning that Russian troops are heading close very fast, leaving literally not even minutes for people to gather their things and run.

Pokrovsk has been one of the major targets since the war began. Now, with Russia drawing closer and closer, civilian safety is paramount. The authorities are worried about getting people out safely as the situation worsens.

Such an attack against the Kursk region may make Russia send some of its soldiers back to defend their own land. This would definitely help Ukraine in some sense but is a dangerous risk. This move by Ukraine, to attack within Russia, shows just how bold they are but also how much danger they are in.

The Russian army has been attacking since spring, having the upper hand, especially in the Donetsk region. Ukraine’s actions can be consequential in a really big way. At this point, looking at the situation after the attack in Kursk, the Kremlin is going to hit really hard.

As Russian forces close in on Pokrovsk, it exposes civilians to danger. A protracted war has put a heavy strain on Ukraine’s military. What is happening now in Pokrovsk further underlines the tension and stakes of the Russia-Ukraine War.

Russia-Ukraine War: From Where It Started?

According to Wikipedia,

On 24 February 2022, Russia invaded Ukraine in a major escalation of the Russo-Ukrainian War, which started in 2014. The invasion, the largest conflict in Europe since World War II has caused hundreds of thousands of military casualties and tens of thousands of Ukrainian civilian casualties.

As of 2024, Russian troops are occupying about 20% of Ukraine. From a population of 41 million, about 8 million Ukrainians had been internally displaced and more than 8.2 million had fled the country by April 2023, creating Europe’s largest refugee crisis since World War II.

Karachi’s National Stadium: Second phase of renovation to be completed after Champions Trophy 2025

Karachi’s National Stadium is all geared up for a new look as the country prepares itself to host the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. A reimagined design was rolled out by the PCB, following which work on an ambitious renovation project to revamp one of Pakistan’s most iconic cricket venues will get underway. There will be two phases of renovation, with the first one to be completed ahead of the Champions Trophy.

The renovation’s centerpiece will be a new building in front of the main structure that will house VIP boxes, a gallery, media facilities, and space for players’ families. Also, plans are afoot to relocate dressing rooms in the new structure with modern amenities provided for the players. The old scoreboard building and the Iqbal Qasim and Naseem-ul-Ghani enclosures have already been demolished as part of the ongoing construction efforts.

Renovation works’ second phase, involving laying a roof covering over the entire venue, will be completed only after the 2025 Champions Trophy, although construction work will be managed with great care to avoid disturbance, especially during the matches, with the Pakistan-Bangladesh Test match scheduled for August 30th set to happen without spectators.

Upgrades have been approved by PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi, which becomes a part of an overall strategy to uplift the cricket infrastructure across the country. A budget of Rs 12.80 billion has been sanctioned for the up-gradation of stadiums in Karachi, Lahore, and Rawalpindi. The ICC will also provide around $ 70 million for the Champions Trophy, covering expenses during the support period comprising warm-up matches, media activities, and promotional events.

The UK-based design expertise architectural firm BDP Pattern will lead the project, having done designs for about 200 stadiums across the world. Speaking exclusively to Dawn, BDP Pattern intends to modernize facilities and provide a world-class experience for spectators at Karachi’s National Stadium. These up-gradations have the potential to push up Pakistan’s capacity for holding major international cricket events many-fold and usher in a new chapter for cricket in the country.

Sindh Government Increases Salaries of Vice Chancellors at Public Sector Universities

In a significant move, the Government of Sindh has announced a substantial increase in the salaries of Vice Chancellors (VCs) of public sector universities across the province. The decision aligns the compensation of VCs with the highest Tenure Track System (TTS) scale, reflecting the government’s commitment to improving the academic leadership in higher education institutions.

According to an official notification issued by the Department of Universities and Boards, and approved by the Sindh Chief Minister, the new minimum salary for VCs will now stand at Rs684,450. This represents an annual increment of approximately Rs20,000. Additionally, a ‘vice-chancellor allowance,’ set at 20% of the basic salary, will now surpass Rs136,000, pushing the total monthly remuneration for VCs to over Rs820,000.

The notification emphasizes that this revised pay structure will apply to all current VCs for the remainder of their terms. Notably, five new VCs were appointed in Sindh just a day before this announcement, while several others are in the midst of their second, third, or fourth years of service. These adjustments will therefore have a considerable positive impact on their earnings.

This move follows an investigative report published by The Express Group on June 20, which highlighted the disparities in salaries among VCs in the province. The report pointed out that some VCs were earning salaries only marginally higher than those of senior professors, while others, due to the absence of a fixed upper limit, were drawing salaries ranging from Rs1 million to Rs3 million per month. It was also revealed that a former VC earned approximately Rs3 million monthly during his tenure without the necessary approvals from the relevant authorities or the Chief Minister.

Despite this increase, the new notification does not specify an upper salary limit for VCs, labeling the revision as a ‘standardization/rationalization of salaries.’ This leaves room for potential variances in salaries, depending on the specific terms and agreements made at the time of appointment.

In a related development, the Higher Education Commission (HEC) in Islamabad recently approved a minimum monthly salary of Rs1 million for VCs of public universities across Pakistan. However, this decision has yet to be implemented at the provincial level in Sindh due to delays by the HEC.

The salary hike for VCs in Sindh is seen as a crucial step toward addressing long-standing issues related to compensation in higher education leadership. It is expected to enhance the attractiveness of these positions, ensuring that the province’s universities continue to attract and retain qualified and experienced individuals to lead them.

With these changes, the Sindh government aims to standardize compensation, reduce disparities, and ensure that the province’s higher education sector is led by capable and adequately compensated leaders. The increase also reflects broader efforts to improve governance and performance within public universities, ultimately benefiting students, faculty, and the academic community at large.

WHO Declares Monkeypox 1Global Health Emergency Amid Rising Cases in Africa

The World Health Organization (WHO) has officially declared the surge in monkeypox (mpox) cases in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and other African countries a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC). The decision was announced by WHO Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus following the recommendations of an Emergency Committee convened under the International Health Regulations (2005) (IHR).

A Growing Threat in Africa

The declaration comes as a response to the alarming increase in monkeypox cases in the DRC and the spread of the virus to several neighboring countries. The emergence of a new clade of the monkeypox virus, alongside outbreaks of existing clades, has raised significant concerns about the virus’s potential to spread further across the African continent and beyond.

Dr. Tedros highlighted the severity of the situation in his statement:

“The emergence of a new clade of mpox, its rapid spread in eastern DRC, and the reporting of cases in several neighboring countries are very worrying. On top of outbreaks of other mpox clades in DRC and other countries in Africa, it’s clear that a coordinated international response is needed to stop these outbreaks and save lives.”

Urgent International Action Required

The WHO’s decision underscores the need for an urgent and coordinated international response. WHO Regional Director for Africa, Dr. Matshidiso Moeti, emphasized that significant efforts are already in motion, with WHO teams working closely with communities and governments to curb the spread of the virus. However, with the virus spreading rapidly, there is a need for further scaling up of efforts.

“Significant efforts are already underway in close collaboration with communities and governments, with our country teams working on the frontlines to help reinforce measures to curb mpox. With the growing spread of the virus, we’re scaling up further through coordinated international action to support countries bring the outbreaks to an end,” Dr. Moeti said.

Global Implications and the Need for Decisive Action

Professor Dimie Ogoina, Chair of the Emergency Committee, warned of the global implications of the current upsurge in monkeypox cases. He pointed out that the new strain, which has shown signs of sexual transmissibility, presents a significant threat not only to Africa but to the entire world.

“The current upsurge of mpox in parts of Africa, along with the spread of a new sexually transmissible strain of the monkeypox virus, is an emergency, not only for Africa but for the entire globe. Mpox, originating in Africa, was neglected there, and later caused a global outbreak in 2022. It is time to act decisively to prevent history from repeating itself,” Professor Ogoina stated.

Vaccine Efforts and Global Support

WHO’s Strategic Advisory Group of Experts on Immunization has recommended two vaccines currently in use for monkeypox. These vaccines have been approved by national regulatory authorities in countries like Nigeria and the DRC. To expedite vaccine access for lower-income countries, Dr. Tedros has initiated the process for Emergency Use Listing for these vaccines. This listing will enable global partners, including Gavi and UNICEF, to procure and distribute vaccines more efficiently.

WHO is actively working with vaccine manufacturers and countries on potential donations and is coordinating with partners through the interim Medical Countermeasures Network to ensure equitable access to vaccines, therapeutics, and diagnostics.

Funding and Resource Mobilization

To support the necessary surveillance, preparedness, and response activities, WHO anticipates an immediate funding requirement of $15 million. The organization has already released $1.45 million from the WHO Contingency Fund for Emergencies and may release additional funds as needed in the coming days. A comprehensive needs assessment is also being conducted across all levels of the WHO to facilitate a rapid and effective response to the monkeypox outbreak.

The WHO’s declaration of monkeypox as a global health emergency underscores the critical need for swift and coordinated international action to address the spread of the virus, particularly in Africa, and to prevent further global transmission.

Karachi Reports First Congo Virus Case of 2024: Butcher in Critical Condition

Karachi has reported its first case of the Congo virus for 2024, marking the start of a potentially concerning health situation. The patient, a 32-year-old butcher, tested positive for Crimean-Congo Hemorrhagic Fever (CCHF) late Wednesday evening. He was initially admitted to Dr. Ruth Pfau Civil Hospital Karachi on Tuesday but was later transferred to Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC) before being moved to the Sindh Infectious Disease Hospital and Research Centre for specialized care.

Dr. Yahya Tunio, the Deputy Executive Director of JPMC, confirmed the severity of the patient’s condition. “He is in critical condition. We have moved him to a specialized hospital for infectious diseases where he will receive appropriate care,” Dr. Tunio stated.

The patient’s profession as a butcher is significant, as Congo fever is commonly transmitted through ticks and can also spread via contact with infected animal tissues during and immediately after slaughter. This particular case raises concerns due to the high-risk nature of the patient’s job, which involves direct exposure to livestock.

The Threat of Congo Fever

Crimean-Congo Hemorrhagic Fever is a viral hemorrhagic fever that can have severe consequences. The virus is primarily transmitted to humans through tick bites or contact with the blood, organs, or other bodily fluids of infected animals. The disease is endemic in parts of Africa, Asia, and Eastern Europe, and Pakistan has reported several cases in recent years, particularly in areas where livestock farming is prevalent.

The case fatality rate for Congo fever can be as high as 40 percent, making it one of the more dangerous viral infections. The virus causes symptoms such as high fever, muscle aches, dizziness, neck pain, back pain, and sore eyes. In severe cases, it can lead to bleeding, organ failure, and death. Unfortunately, there is no vaccine available for CCHF, either for humans or animals, making prevention and early detection critical.

Public Health Concerns

The emergence of Congo fever in Karachi underscores the ongoing public health challenges the city faces. With no available vaccine, the focus must remain on controlling tick populations, ensuring proper handling of livestock, and raising awareness about the risks associated with contact with infected animals.

Healthcare authorities in Karachi are likely to increase surveillance and implement measures to prevent the spread of the virus. Public health campaigns may also be launched to educate the public, particularly those in high-risk professions like butchery and livestock farming, about the importance of protective measures.

Broader Implications

The identification of Congo fever in a major urban center like Karachi could have broader implications for public health management in Pakistan. The city’s dense population and the close proximity in which people live and work raise the risk of the virus spreading if not contained effectively. This case serves as a reminder of the importance of robust healthcare infrastructure, timely medical interventions, and continuous public education to manage and mitigate the impact of such infectious diseases.

As the situation develops, healthcare authorities will need to remain vigilant, particularly as the country is still dealing with other health threats like dengue, which has also seen a rise following recent rainfall in Punjab. The convergence of multiple infectious diseases in the country puts a strain on medical resources and highlights the need for comprehensive disease control strategies.

The first Congo virus case of 2024 in Karachi is a stark reminder of the ever-present threat of infectious diseases and the critical need for preparedness and effective response mechanisms.

Jason Gillespie Invites Arshad Nadeem to Inspire Pakistan Cricket Team Ahead of Bangladesh Test Series

In a gesture that underscores the unity and camaraderie between different sports in Pakistan, Jason Gillespie, the head coach of the Pakistan Test cricket team, has extended a heartfelt invitation to Arshad Nadeem, the country’s newest Olympic gold medalist, to visit the team’s dressing room. This invitation comes ahead of Pakistan’s highly anticipated Test series against Bangladesh.

Arshad Nadeem, who recently made history by winning the gold medal in the javelin throw at the Paris 2024 Olympics, has become a national icon. His outstanding performance not only brought immense pride to Pakistan but also set a new Olympic record. As the nation continues to celebrate his incredible achievement, the cricket team hopes to honor him in their own unique way.

During a recent episode of the PCB podcast, Jason Gillespie shared his admiration for Nadeem’s monumental success and expressed his desire to have the Olympian visit the team. “We would love to invite Arshad Nadeem to the dressing room as well. I saw all the Shaheens cheering him on during the Olympics. Having him visit and share his gold medal with the team would be a fantastic boost, especially with the Olympic spirit still in the air. It was a wonderful moment, and we extend an open invitation for him to visit the dressing room,” Gillespie remarked.

The connection between cricket and Nadeem’s achievement goes beyond just admiration. The cricket team, known as the Shaheens, was seen cheering passionately for Nadeem during the Olympics, reflecting the deep respect they have for fellow athletes representing Pakistan on the global stage. Gillespie’s invitation is more than just a symbolic gesture; it’s an acknowledgment of the shared values of perseverance, dedication, and national pride that drive both cricketers and Olympians alike.

Pakistan Test captain Shan Masood also weighed in on Nadeem’s success, highlighting the emotional impact it had on the entire nation. “Arshad Nadeem has made us all emotional. Seeing him on the podium waving the flag and ringing the Olympic bell was incredible. He deserves all the recognition he’s getting and is a national hero. His achievements highlight the talent in Pakistan, and we’re all proud of him,” Masood said, his voice filled with pride.

Masood went on to discuss how Nadeem’s remarkable journey serves as an inspiration for the cricket team. “Does it put pressure on the team? I don’t see it as pressure but as a privilege. Representing Pakistan is a huge honor, and every day we play is a privilege. We should feel extremely proud and grateful to represent our country. Arshad Nadeem’s success motivates us to seize our opportunity to do something good for Pakistan,” Masood added, emphasizing the sense of responsibility and honor that comes with wearing the green jersey.

The invitation to Nadeem symbolizes the broader spirit of unity within Pakistan’s sports community. As the cricket team prepares to face Bangladesh in the upcoming Test series, the potential visit from Nadeem could serve as a powerful reminder of what can be achieved through hard work, resilience, and unwavering dedication. It’s a meeting of champions—those who excel in different fields but share the same goal of bringing glory to their nation.

Arshad Nadeem’s journey from a small town in Pakistan to the Olympic podium is a story of perseverance that resonates with every athlete. His potential visit to the Pakistan cricket team’s dressing room would not only be a moment of celebration but also a powerful source of inspiration as the team embarks on their next challenge.

Dutch Embassy Hosts Event Celebrating the Achievements of Pakistani Women in Sports

In a significant move to highlight the progress and achievements of women in sports, Dutch Ambassador Henny de Vries hosted a distinguished reception in Islamabad on Tuesday. The event celebrated the exceptional contributions of Pakistani women athletes and underscored the importance of gender equality in sports. The evening’s focal point was the visit of Dutch-Pakistani footballer Kayanat Bokhari, whose presence highlighted the ongoing collaboration between the Netherlands and Pakistan in promoting women’s sports.

Ambassador de Vries expressed her admiration for the dedication and talent of Pakistani women athletes during her address to the gathered guests. She extended warm congratulations to Kayanat Bokhari and the Women Legacy team, who recently secured the runners-up position at the National Women’s Championship. The ambassador’s words were a testament to the growing recognition of women’s sports in Pakistan and the commitment of the Dutch Embassy to support these endeavors.

Collaborative Efforts to Promote Women in Sports

The event also showcased the collaborative efforts between the Netherlands and various Pakistani organizations to advance women’s participation in sports. The embassy, in partnership with Football Factory, Right to Play, and Interloop, has been actively involved in organizing activities aimed at empowering female athletes. Ambassador de Vries acknowledged the numerous challenges that women in sports face, including discrimination and limited funding, but lauded their perseverance and achievements in the face of adversity.

Kayanat Bokhari, who has been training with the Women Legacy Football Club in Islamabad for the past month, shared her journey with the audience. She reflected on her initial meeting with Ambassador de Vries in January, which eventually led to her involvement with the Football Factory. Despite initial uncertainties, Bokhari’s participation in the team culminated in a successful tournament experience, demonstrating the power of collaboration and support.

Impact of International Support on Women’s Sports

During her speech, Bokhari, who represents both the Pakistan national team and Football Factory, expressed her pride in the team’s efforts and achievements. She emphasized the significance of the support and investment received from the Netherlands, highlighting how it has motivated the players and enhanced their performance. “I am super proud of each and every girl standing here because you all worked so hard, and our coaches who made all of this happen. For some of the girls, it was their first tournament, and that makes all this support, investment, and belief in us so incredible,” Bokhari stated.

Malika-i-Noor, the captain of the Women Legacy Football Club, also conveyed her gratitude to the Dutch Embassy for the special recognition of their hard work and progress. She recounted her journey from seeking a place to train at Football Factory just eight months ago to leading her team to the national championship runners-up position. Malika noted the significance of having a club that meets the standards of modern football and the invaluable support from the Netherlands, which has strengthened the bonds among the team members and boosted their morale.

Fostering Sports Diplomacy and Camaraderie

The event highlighted the importance of international collaboration in fostering sports diplomacy and camaraderie. The swift ascent of the Women Legacy Football Club to becoming national championship runners-up is a testament to the positive impact that such partnerships can have on the development of women’s sports in Pakistan. The support from the Netherlands has not only helped the athletes achieve their goals but also paved the way for greater recognition and opportunities for women in sports.

As the evening drew to a close, the celebration of these remarkable women athletes served as a reminder of the potential that lies in empowering women through sports. The Dutch Embassy’s commitment to supporting women’s sports in Pakistan is a shining example of how international partnerships can drive positive change and create a lasting impact on the lives of athletes.

Pakistan Ranks 2nd Among New Companies Registered in Dubai During H1 2024

In the first half of 2024, Pakistan emerged as the second-largest source of new companies joining the Dubai Chamber of Commerce, with a total of 3,968 Pakistani firms registering. This notable achievement places Pakistan just behind India, which saw 7,860 new companies becoming members during the same period, highlighting Dubai’s appeal as a prime destination for business and investment.

Dubai’s Growing Appeal to International Businesses

A recent analysis by the Dubai Chamber of Commerce, which operates under the umbrella of Dubai Chambers, reveals that Indian investors led the list of non-Emirati companies joining the chamber in H1 2024. The influx of Indian companies underscores Dubai’s attractiveness as a hub for direct investment from India, reflecting the emirate’s growing reputation as a global business center.

Pakistan’s second-place ranking with 3,968 new companies further emphasizes the emirate’s appeal to international entrepreneurs. Egypt followed in third place with 2,355 new companies joining the chamber. The analysis highlights Dubai’s role as a magnet for businesses from diverse nationalities, fostering a dynamic and multicultural business environment.

Significant Contributions from Other Countries

In addition to India, Pakistan, and Egypt, several other countries contributed significantly to the growth of new companies in Dubai. Syria saw 1,358 companies join the chamber, securing fourth place. The United Kingdom ranked fifth with 1,245 new companies, followed by Bangladesh, which added 1,119 companies to the chamber’s membership in H1 2024.

Iraq, China, Sudan, and Jordan also made notable contributions. Iraq claimed the seventh spot with 799 new companies, while China followed closely with 742 new registrations. Sudan ranked ninth with 683 new companies, and Jordan completed the top ten with 674 new companies joining the Dubai Chamber of Commerce.

Sectoral Distribution of New Member Companies

The sectoral analysis of new member companies joining the chamber in the first half of 2024 shows a strong concentration in trade and repairing services, which accounted for 41.5 percent of the total. This sector’s dominance reflects Dubai’s role as a key trading hub in the region.

The real estate, renting, and business services sector came in second, representing 33.6 percent of the total new registrations. This was followed by the construction sector, which accounted for 9.4 percent of the new companies. The transport, storage, and communications sector ranked fourth with 8.4 percent, while the social and personal services sector rounded out the top five with 6.6 percent of the new registrations.

Strong Growth in the Construction Sector

Among the top five sectors, the construction sector demonstrated the strongest growth, with a 23.5 percent increase compared to the same period in 2023. This surge reflects Dubai’s ongoing infrastructure development and its appeal to companies involved in large-scale projects.

The transport, storage, and communication sectors also showed robust growth, achieving a 13.6 percent increase year-over-year. The real estate, renting, and business services sector saw a 9.5 percent increase, further highlighting the steady demand for these services in Dubai’s thriving economy.

Actor Nimra Khan Narrowly Escapes Kidnapping Attempt in Karachi’s DHA

Prominent Pakistani actor Nimra Khan narrowly escaped a harrowing kidnapping attempt in Karachi’s Defence Housing Authority area, raising grave concerns over the safety of women in the country. CCTV footage of the incident, which has gone viral since, shows that Nimra was waiting outside a hotel (presumably waiting for her car) when two men on a motorcycle approached her.

The CCTV footage shows that the attackers had tried to forcefully abduct Nimra. She, however, pushed the men back and ran towards the main road. She waved down a passing car that stopped (maybe the car she was waiting for), thus saving her from the possible kidnappers. The would-be kidnappers fled the scene after their failed attempt.

Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah and Deputy Inspector General of Police South Asad Raza have taken notice of the incident. The DIG South, however, sought reports from the concerned officials. Nimra Khan took to Instagram and shared her horrific experience with the world, saying that three armed men had attempted to drag her into their car at gunpoint. When the people passing by did not bother to help, Nimra fought back and succeeded in escaping in a passing car.

The incident has evoked countrywide concern regarding the safety of Pakistani women. In her viral video, Nimra asked if women could ever be safe in this country, at least on national days like Pakistan Day. Her experience epitomizes very clearly the plight that women face regarding personal security amidst public spaces.

National Assembly summons PTA chairman for social media and internet disruptions

The Standing Committee of the National Assembly on IT has summoned the chairman of the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority, Hafiz Rehman, to explain the ongoing social media and internet disruptions across the country. The meeting has been called on August 21 at the Parliament House, headed by Amin ul Haq, while the AGP is also invited.

Pakistan faces social media and internet disruption without known cause

The question comes at a time when the entire Pakistan is facing internet service disruption and weak mobile signals with unknown causes. Preliminary reports suggested that the matter could link up with international traffic problems rather than domestic network faults. However, PTCL officials preliminarily declared a fault in an underground submarine cable as a cause that has affected services across the country.

Despite these disturbances, Meta platforms—Facebook, WhatsApp, and Instagram—continue to remain operative. To make this even more complicated, the Pakistan government decided to install a nationwide firewall across ISPs after the Punjab government enacted the Defamation Law 2024.

This will be the firewall equipped with DPI technology that will monitor and filter data all the way up to the seventh layer. This system shall be used in controlling content through blocking propaganda and prevention of access to proscribed material. The ISPs are obligated to install the firewall with partial financial aid from the government.

Such a firewall will have the capability to block data at the IP level, and the ISPs will have no choice but to fall in line with government measures to block illegal content as part of licensing agreements. The move has created grave apprehensions over internet freedom and the increasing control of the Pakistani government over cyberspace.

Japan recognizes Palestine as an individual state

Japan is considering the landmark step of formally recognizing the existence of Palestine as an independent state, a factor that will greatly alter the dynamics of its foreign policy and the broader Middle East peace process. Currently, Japan accommodates the permanent general mission of State of Palestine in Tokyo, although the PLO, which had opened its mission in Japan back in 1977, managed it under the leadership of Ambassador Waleed Siam.

Japan planning to recognize Palestine as an individual state along with maintaining good relationships with Israel

It has just been announced that, according to Ambassador Siam, both Japan and South Korea are now looking seriously at the possibility of recognizing Palestine. That is viewed as an act which would not preclude future negotiations with Israel, as Japan will support a “two-state solution” by all diplomatic means.

Japan’s consideration comes amidst a shifting global sentiment, as several Western countries—Spain, Norway, and Ireland among them—already recognize Palestine as an independent state. This issue of the state of Palestine has been further raised within Japanese public discourse through increased protests and calls for a Gaza ceasefire.

In a related development, Nagasaki—who was hardly hit by the bomb in World War II—did not extend invitations to Israeli officials during its commemoration ceremony, which actually served as an indicator of a subliminal change in attitude by Japan.

Japan is still considering recognizing Palestine but has continued making good relations with both Israel and Palestine. Historic visits were noted with both Japanese and Palestinian leaders visiting each other’s nations to mark Japan’s special role in the region.

Japan’s stance supporting the Palestinian cause includes even its support of the qualification of Palestine toward attaining membership in the United Nations, as well as through other connected UN resolutions. As of October 2023, commitments by Japan had already reached $125 million in assistance to the Palestinians.

The case of Gaza is getting worse as the conflict continues to rise, with 19 people having been left dead in recent Israeli airstrikes. The violence drew wide condemnation from the international community, especially after an accusation by the International Court of Justice that Israel committed genocide and the demand for the military operations to stop in Rafah immediately.

Pakistan vs Bangladesh Second Test to Be Played Without Fans

The Pakistan Cricket Board has announced that the second Test of Pakistan vs Bangladesh two-match series is going to be played behind closed doors. The Karachi test is scheduled to take place at National Bank Cricket Arena from 30 September to 3 October 2024. This step has been taken as the stadium is undergoing extensive renovations in preparation for ICC Champions Trophy 2025.

Here is why Pakistan vs Bangladesh second Test will be played without spectators

This is necessary ongoing construction work to upgrade the stadium up to international standards and get it ready to host Champions Trophy, the first ICC event since 1996 in Pakistan. The PCB has stressed that fans’ health and safety is the first priority for them; therefore, keeping the stands empty for the match is a regrettable yet necessary decision.

Thus, the sale of tickets to the match is suspended with immediate effect, and fans who prepaid for tickets will get a full refund to their respective accounts. The PCB has acknowledged that this decision might disappoint cricket lovers, but asserts that it needs to guarantee a safe environment for one and all.

The broader upgradation of the stadium is part of a massive drive to enhance audience experience and make it more fan-friendly in time for the Champions Trophy. Renovations are being done to make the facility more modern, improved, and safe in its offerings for a better experience of events to be hosted in the future.

The Bangladesh men’s cricket team reached Lahore from Dhaka amidst tight security. The visiting team will rest at a private hotel before they would conduct the practice sessions at Gaddafi Stadium on August 14, 15, and 16 and then shift to Islamabad to play the first Test match in Rawalpindi from August 21-25, 2024.

Sifan Hassan Makes History, Receives Olympic Gold in Hijab at Paris 2024

Dutch Olympian Sifan Hassan made headlines not just for her incredible athletic achievements at the Paris Olympics 2024 but also for the powerful statement she made by wearing a hijab while accepting her gold medal. Hassan, a long-distance runner originally from Ethiopia, captured the world’s attention when she completed the 42.5-kilometer Olympic Marathon in a record-breaking 2 hours, 22 minutes, and 55 seconds.

The marathon was a fiercely competitive race, with Ethiopia’s Tigst Assefa finishing just three seconds behind Hassan to claim the silver, and Kenya’s Hellen Obiri taking the bronze with a time of 2:23:10. However, Hassan’s victory was not just measured by the stopwatch but also by the significance of her actions on the podium.

A Historic Achievement in Long-Distance Running

Sifan Hassan’s triumph in the marathon added to her already impressive haul of medals at the Paris Olympics. She had previously won bronze in both the 5,000 meters and the 10,000 meters, making her the only athlete to win medals in all three long-distance events at a single Olympic Games. This remarkable achievement cemented her status as one of the greatest long-distance runners in history.

After her marathon win, Hassan expressed her disbelief and joy, stating, “I feel like I am dreaming… At the end, I thought, ‘This is just a 100m sprint. Come on, Sifan. One more. Just feel it, like someone who sprints 200m.’” Her words reflected the sheer determination and resilience that had propelled her to the top of the podium.

A Powerful Message Through the Hijab

While Hassan’s athletic prowess was celebrated worldwide, her decision to wear a hijab during the medal ceremony sent a powerful message that resonated far beyond the sports community. Clad in a bright orange tracksuit and a maroon hijab, Hassan’s appearance on the podium was particularly significant in France, a country that has been at the center of debates around secularism and religious expression in public life.

France had previously sparked controversy by prohibiting athletes from wearing head coverings, including hijabs, during competitions in line with the nation’s strict secularism laws. Last year, French Minister of Sports Amelie Oudea-Castera confirmed the government’s stance, stating that the display of religious symbols at athletic events was prohibited. However, the sports ministry later clarified that athletes would be allowed to wear hijabs in public and within the Olympic village, though the ban during competitions remained a contentious issue.

Hassan’s decision to wear her hijab during the medal ceremony was seen by many as a subtle yet powerful act of defiance against these restrictions. It highlighted the ongoing struggle for religious freedom and the right to self-expression, particularly for Muslim women athletes who face additional barriers in the world of sports.

An Inspirational Figure on and Off the Track

Sifan Hassan’s journey from Ethiopia to becoming a celebrated Dutch Olympian is inspirational on multiple levels. Her success at the Paris Olympics is not just a testament to her incredible talent and hard work but also to her courage in standing up for her beliefs. By wearing her hijab on the podium, Hassan showed the world that an athlete’s identity and faith can coexist with their professional achievements.

As the world continues to grapple with issues of inclusivity and representation, Sifan Hassan’s actions at the Paris Olympics 2024 serve as a powerful reminder of the importance of diversity and the strength that comes from embracing one’s true self, both on and off the track.
