Pakistan petroleum industry is collapsing

Tariq Wazir Ali has issued a stern warning to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, highlighting the imminent collapse of Pakistan petroleum industry. In a recent letter, Ali detailed the severe impact of Rs. 26 billion in foreign exchange losses on the sector and urged for immediate intervention to address the escalating crisis.

Ali’s warning comes amid a backdrop of existing challenges plaguing the petroleum industry. Despite recognizing flaws in the foreign exchange system, the Ministry of Petroleum has yet to resolve the critical issues. An April meeting organized by the Director General of Oil resulted in a set of recommendations, which were subsequently forwarded to the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA). However, these recommendations remain unresolved at the Prime Minister’s office, causing further delays.

The industry’s struggles are exacerbated by these delays and the lack of resolution. Ali criticized the Ministry of Petroleum for its delaying tactics, stating that such inaction is driving the sector towards disaster. He emphasized the urgency of the situation, calling on Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to take immediate steps to prevent the industry’s collapse.

The petroleum sector’s collapse would have far-reaching consequences for Pakistan’s economy, affecting everything from energy supply to broader economic stability.

Top Bollywood Celebrities Missing from Anant Ambani’s Wedding

Finally, the youngest son of the richest tycoon, Mukesh Ambani, Anant Ambani, got married to Radhika Merchant in what definitely was the most-read and most-Googled wedding of the year. Though the event became a convergence point for a large number of Bollywood celebrities and scores of international celebrities, several major key figures gave it a miss.

Missing Bollywood Celebrities at Anant Ambani and Radhika Merchant’s Star-Studded Wedding

Here’s an inside deep dive into which bollywood celebrities failed to make it for the festivity and why.

Kartik Aaryan

Kartik Aaryan began shooting for “Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3” earlier this month, ruling out his attendance at the wedding. There has been some speculation that Kartik was not invited because of his alleged past romantic relationship with Janhvi Kapoor. Janhvi is currently dating one of Anant’s best friends and a groomsman, Shikhar Pahariya, which could impact the dynamics of the invitee list.

Kareena Kapoor Khan and Saif Ali Khan

Of course, the power couple was celebrating the annual family holiday with their sons, Taimur Ali Khan and Jehangir Ali Khan. Kareena and Saif were big attractions at the first of the pre-wedding festivities held in Jamnagar, Gujarat. Their absence was definitely noticed, but their family commitments came first.

Akshay Kumar and Twinkle Khanna

Akshay Kumar tested positive for COVID-19 and is under isolation with wife Twinkle Khanna. Akshay was an unforgettable performer at the pre-wedding festivities. His dynamism is missed, but health and safety first.

Kangana Ranaut

Kangana Ranaut had to be present at her cousin Varun Ranaut’s marriage and had prior commitments in acting and politics. The commitments of Kangana came in the way of attending the high-profile event. She sent her warm wishes for the newlyweds, though.

Anushka Sharma and Virat Kohli

The couple was present at a Kirtan being conducted by American vocalist Krishna Das in London. Just after celebrating India’s victory in the T20 World Cup, Virat joined Anushka and the kids in the UK. The latter’s presence in the UK couldn’t make it back home for the wedding that had to be in India.

Aamir Khan

Aamir Khan wasn’t specified about his reason for not being able to attend. Aamir was present at the pre-wedding bash in Jamnagar with Shah Rukh Khan and Salman Khan. While he couldn’t make it to the main event, daughter Ira Khan and son-in-law Nupur Shikhare did represent the family.

Parineeti Chopra and Raghav Chadha

Parineeti and her soon-to-be husband, Raghav Chadha, were attending Wimbledon Finals 2024. Priyanka Chopra Jonas and her husband Nick Jonas were there to make sure that the Chopra family was represented even when Parineeti was away.

Diljit Dosanjh

The singer was performing in Canada as part of his Dil-Luminati Tour Year 24. Diljit Dosanjh performed at the pre-wedding bash in Jamnagar, adding to the revelries. His ongoing tour kept him away from the actual wedding, but his performance is one to be remembered.

Sonam Kapoor Ahuja

Sonam Kapoor was present watching the Wimbledon women’s finals in the UK. Her father, Anil Kapoor, managed to make it to the wedding, while her sister, Rhea Kapoor, doubled as the stylist of the bride. Sonam’s absence was offset with active participation in the wedding by her family.

Conclusion

Even though these bollywood stars stars were not present at the wedding of Anant Ambani and Radhika Merchant, this was still a flash-and-glamour affair. The reasons ranged from professional commitments to falling sick, family engagement, and international events. Yet, that did not lack anything on the guest list; rather, it flaunted the Ambanis’ clout in Bollywood and globally. All these missing stars forward their best wishes, showing spontaneous support and love toward this new couple.

This minor action flooded the rumor mill with regard to his marriage to Aishwarya Rai.

The painful truth about divorce on the Instagram post that caught Abhishek’s attention spoke of the hope for “happily ever after” and how couples face very difficult life adjustments post-separation, more so when a marriage has lasted for long. It brought out an increasing phenomenon of “grey divorces” or “silver splitters,” which corresponds to divorces later in life, often after the age of 50.

Abhishek Bachan and Aishwarya Rai appeared separately during Anant Ambani’s wedding

The latest is that the couple appeared separately at a recent high-profile Ambani wedding, which certainly added fuel to the fire. This unusual occurrence has increased the speculation, leaving one to wonder if there’s actually more to the story about their relationship. Abhishek’s social media activity and the development of the couple’s starting separate public appearances have got fans and onlookers wondering if the marriage will survive.

Naturally, Abhishek Bachan and Aishwarya Rai have not come up with anything for the public concerning this speculation. With the media continuing to watch the situation closely, it’s just left to hope that the couple can sail through whatever crisis they are going through personally. For now, the buzz around Abhishek’s Instagram like and the separate outing of the couple remains a hot topic in Bollywood circles.

How to Get a Hungary Work Visa: Top Job Opportunities in Hungary

Hungary’s evolving labor market has created significant opportunities for foreign workers, particularly in fields experiencing acute shortages. The 2023 EURES report on shortages and surpluses outlines 36 occupations where Hungary is struggling to meet labor demands. This situation presents a prime opportunity for skilled professionals seeking work visas in Hungary.

Key Sectors Facing Shortages

Hungary’s labor market faces critical shortages in several industries, including the cleaning sector, construction, engineering, manufacturing, agriculture, and personal care services. According to Schengen.News, these sectors are in dire need of workers, presenting a pathway for foreign professionals to secure employment and work visas in Hungary.

Growing Job Vacancies

Despite fluctuations, Hungary has seen a consistent increase in job vacancies over the past few years. In 2023, Statista reported 79,000 job vacancies in the country. The manufacturing industry alone accounted for over 19,000 of these positions, followed by administrative and support service activities. These statistics highlight the demand for foreign workers in high-demand roles, enhancing their chances of obtaining work visas in Hungary.

High-Demand Occupations

The EURES report identifies several occupations experiencing labor shortages in Hungary. These include:

  • Elementary workers not elsewhere classified
  • Messengers, package deliverers, and luggage porters
  • Refuse sorters and garbage/recycling collectors
  • Building construction laborers and civil engineering laborers
  • Forestry laborers and crop farm laborers
  • Other cleaning workers
  • Sewing machine operators and related workers
  • Cabinet-makers and related workers
  • Fruit, vegetable, and related preservers
  • Butchers, fishmongers, and related food preparers
  • Handicraft workers in wood, basketry, and related materials
  • Signwriters, decorative painters, engravers, and etchers
  • Insulation workers, plasterers, and roofers

These roles are essential to Hungary’s economy, and the shortage of labor in these fields provides a strategic advantage for foreign workers.

New Immigration Policies

Hungary has recently introduced stricter immigration rules for third-country nationals in response to rising migration figures. Under the new policy, guest worker residence permits will only be issued to foreigners employed by specific employers in designated jobs. Additionally, these permits can be renewed for up to three years. This regulatory change emphasizes the need for targeted employment opportunities for foreign workers.

Living Costs in Hungary

Prospective workers should be aware of the living costs in Hungary. According to Numbeo, the average monthly living expenses for one person, excluding rent, are estimated at €640 or 250,623 Hungarian Forint (Ft). Rent varies by location and apartment size, with a one-bedroom apartment in the city center costing around €462 (Ft 181,102) per month, while outside the city center, rent is approximately €360 (Ft 140,865).

For families, living costs are higher. A family of four can expect monthly expenses of nearly €2240 (Ft 877,378). Renting a three-bedroom apartment in the city center costs about €743 (Ft 291,346) per month, while outside the city center, the rent is around €610 (Ft 238,981).

Indonesia Expands Visa-Free Travel to Boost Tourism from 20 More Countries

In a significant push to revitalize its tourism sector, Indonesia will soon allow visa-free entry for citizens from 20 additional countries. The Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy has confirmed that this new policy, aimed at enhancing tourist arrivals and economic growth, will take effect from October this year.

Minister Sandiaga Salahuddin Uno provided details about the initiative, emphasizing the focus on markets that promise substantial economic returns. “The selection process is nearly complete, and the list of 20 destinations has been submitted. We are advocating for visa-free entry for tourists from countries that provide the greatest economic impact,” he stated.

The list, compiled in December, includes major tourism markets such as Australia, China, France, Germany, India, Japan, Qatar, South Korea, the UK, and the US. These countries were chosen based on their potential to significantly contribute to Indonesia’s tourism revenues.

Indonesia Expands Visa-Free
Indonesia Visa Free Policy

This move comes as part of a larger effort to rejuvenate the tourism industry, which was severely impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. The easing of social distancing measures and travel restrictions has prompted many countries, including Indonesia, to facilitate easier entry for tourists to drive economic recovery.

Last year, Indonesia welcomed approximately 11.7 million tourists, a figure that is lower than that of other Southeast Asian countries. However, the government remains optimistic about boosting these numbers. In the first quarter of 2024 alone, around three million foreign visitors arrived in Indonesia, and the government has set a target of 17 million tourists by the end of the year.

Minister Uno underscored the economic benefits of increasing tourism, highlighting its role in generating revenue, creating jobs, and stimulating local businesses. “Tourism is a crucial driver of our economy. By opening our doors to more international visitors, we are investing in our future prosperity,” he said.

The visa-free entry program is also a response to global trends. As countries worldwide ease entry requirements to attract tourists in the post-pandemic era, Indonesia aims to position itself as a top travel destination in Southeast Asia by simplifying its visa policies.

Alongside the visa-free initiative, Indonesia is enhancing its marketing efforts to promote its diverse attractions. From the world-renowned beaches of Bali to the cultural heritage of Yogyakarta and the dynamic cityscape of Jakarta, the country offers a wide range of experiences for international travelers.

To handle the expected increase in tourist numbers, the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy is working closely with airlines, travel agencies, and hospitality providers. They are also investing in infrastructure improvements and enhancing services to meet international standards.

This initiative is projected to have a significant positive impact on the economy. Increased tourist arrivals will boost spending in local markets, restaurants, and entertainment venues, benefiting small and medium-sized enterprises. Additionally, it will foster cultural exchange and enhance Indonesia’s image as a welcoming and diverse travel destination.

As the October implementation date approaches, travelers from the selected countries can look forward to a hassle-free entry into Indonesia. The government is committed to ensuring that the visa-free process is efficient and straightforward, allowing visitors to enjoy their stay without the burden of visa applications.

Mohammed Shami Addresses Rumors of Marriage to Sania Mirza

Indian cricketer Mohammed Shami has responded to the recent rumors about his personal life, specifically those linking him to tennis star Sania Mirza.

Shami’s Response

During a recent YouTube interaction, Shami addressed these rumors, calling them “unfounded” and “harmful.” He expressed his frustration over the manipulated images and misleading social media posts that have been spreading these false claims.

The Nature of Social Media Memes

“It’s weird and done purposely for some lame fun. But what can be done?” Shami remarked. He highlighted the pervasiveness of these memes, saying, “If I open my phone, I see those memes. But I would only like to say that I think memes are made for fun, but if they are related to someone’s life, then you must think about it and then share such things.”

Call for Social Media Responsibility

Shami used this platform to urge social media users to be more responsible. “I urge everyone to be responsible with social media and refrain from spreading such unfounded news,” he stated. He also issued a challenge to those spreading these rumors from unverified accounts. “If you have the guts to say all these things from a verified page, then I will reply,” he said.

Personal Backgrounds

For context, Sania Mirza was married to Pakistani cricketer Shoaib Malik from 2010 until their separation earlier this year. They have a five-year-old son, Izhaan. Mohammed Shami has been separated from his wife Hasin Jahan, with whom he got married in 2014. They have a child together.

Shami’s response is a clear attempt to set the record straight and ask for more responsible social media behavior. His direct approach underscores the need for verifying information before sharing it, particularly when it pertains to someone’s personal life.

Zaheer Iqbal Discusses Interfaith Marriage with Sonakshi Sinha

Bollywood actor Zaheer Iqbal has spoken out about his interfaith marriage with actress Sonakshi Sinha, addressing the public scrutiny and societal pressures they have faced.

Public Clarification

In a revealing interview with an Indian media outlet, Zaheer and Sonakshi shared their thoughts on their interfaith marriage, responding to the social media trolling and criticism. They discussed how they manage to maintain a strong relationship despite their different religious backgrounds.

Embracing Diversity

When asked about integrating each other’s cultural and religious practices, Sonakshi responded with enthusiasm. “Absolutely! I think it will be beautiful,” she said. She pointed out that their core values, instilled by their parents, are identical. “Our parents have taught us to be good human beings and believe in God, irrespective of whatever name you know him by. The most important thing in life is to be a good person – that’s the kind of values we have imbibed.”

Mutual Respect

Zaheer Iqbal supported Sonakshi’s views, emphasizing that their religious differences have never been an issue. “I know one thing for sure: that I could have 50,000 disagreements with Sona, but it will never have anything to do with religion,” he asserted. He also shared advice from Salim Khan, which has helped him navigate their interfaith relationship. “Salim uncle had once shared with me that this is what he had told Salma Aunty’s parents when they got married,” Zaheer mentioned.

Tackling External Criticism

Sonakshi noted that their religious backgrounds have never been a problem in their relationship. “In the seven years that we were dating, the fact that we are from different faiths has never come up in a discussion. We both respect other religions. It’s never been an issue for us or even a discussion,” she explained. She added that the criticism they face is solely external. “The only noise is from the outside.”

Their Relationship Journey

For those unfamiliar, Sonakshi Sinha and Zaheer Iqbal married in an intimate civil ceremony on June 23, following a relationship of over seven years. Their marriage exemplifies how love and mutual respect can transcend religious boundaries, standing strong against societal pressures.

EU Tightens Visa Rules for Certain Countries to Curb Irregular Migration

The European Union is taking decisive action to tighten visa-free entry rules for specific visa-exempt third countries. This move aims to curb the rising trend of irregular migration into the EU, marking a significant policy shift within the bloc.

Announcement by EU Home Affairs Commissioner

EU Home Affairs Commissioner Ylva Johansson recently announced the impending changes to the visa regime, as reported by Schengen.News. She emphasized that the formal proposal for these changes is expected in July 2024, highlighting the EU’s commitment to addressing the issue head-on. Johansson noted that the proposal would invoke Article 25a of the Visa Code, allowing the suspension of visa privileges for countries that do not cooperate in the readmission of their citizens.

Letters and Proposals

In letters seen by Euractiv, Commissioner Johansson outlined the Commission’s plan to propose tighter rules. The upcoming proposals aim to suspend visa-free entry privileges for countries that fail to readmit their citizens whose asylum applications have been rejected by the EU. This measure is designed to be a strong deterrent, reducing the number of unfounded asylum applications from visa-exempt countries.

The Commission’s proposals, expected in July, will trigger discussions among EU member states and authorities, urging them to revise the visa suspension mechanisms swiftly. Johansson stressed the urgency of these negotiations to ensure the new rules can be implemented without delay.

Addressing Irregular Migration

Commissioner Johansson highlighted that the tightening of visa rules is crucial for reducing irregular migration and the influx of rejected asylum applications from nationals of visa-free countries. The revision aims to make the visa suspension mechanism more straightforward and effective, enhancing its deterrent effect against irregular migration.

Legislative Process and Approval

The reform of the visa suspension mechanism has been a topic of discussion for some time. However, any changes to Article 25a of the Visa Code require formal approval from Members of the European Parliament (MEPs). The process involves rigorous negotiations and legislative scrutiny to ensure that the revised rules are robust and enforceable.

Case Study: Vanuatu

A recent example underscores the EU’s resolve in this matter. The EU has proposed to permanently suspend visa-free travel for Vanuatu, a decision driven by the country’s failure to address irregular migration and security risks associated with its investor citizenship schemes. This proposal follows a temporary suspension in May 2022, which proved ineffective. The permanent suspension proposal, made in May of this year, reflects the EU’s stringent stance on countries that do not align with its migration and security policies.

Impact on Migration Policy

These developments mark a significant step in the EU’s migration policy, reflecting a shift towards stricter control measures to combat irregular migration. By tightening visa rules for non-cooperative countries, the EU aims to safeguard its borders and maintain the integrity of its asylum system. The proposed changes are expected to streamline the visa suspension process, making it easier to apply and more effective as a deterrent against irregular migration.

PIA Maintains Flight Operations with Alternative Communication on July 19 2024

Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) faced a potential disruption to their flight services on July 19th, 2024. However, the airline successfully ensured continued operations by implementing alternative communication systems.

While the exact nature of the communication system issue isn’t mentioned, it’s commendable that PIA prioritized maintaining flight operations and passenger safety. Here’s a breakdown of the situation:

  • The Challenge: PIA encountered a challenge with their primary communication systems on July 19th, 2024. This could have potentially disrupted flight schedules and caused inconvenience to passengers.
  • The Solution: PIA’s quick response and resourcefulness ensured a smooth flow of operations. They successfully switched to alternative communication systems, minimizing any potential impact on flights.

Possible Communication Systems Used by Airlines:

While the specific details of PIA’s alternative systems aren’t available, airlines typically rely on various communication technologies for smooth operations, including:

  • ACARS (Aircraft Communication Addressing and Reporting System): This digital data link system allows communication between aircraft and ground stations, transmitting critical flight information.
  • HF Radio: High-frequency radio provides long-range communication, particularly important for oceanic crossings or remote areas.
  • Satellite Communication: Satellite technology offers reliable communication even beyond the range of traditional ground stations.

Importance of Maintaining Flight Operations:

PIA’s swift action to address the communication system challenge highlights the importance of maintaining flight operations. Delays and cancellations can cause significant inconvenience to passengers, disrupt travel plans, and potentially impact cargo transportation.

Further Information:

For a more comprehensive understanding of the situation, consider these steps:

  • Check PIA’s Official Channels: Visit the PIA website or social media pages for any official announcements regarding the July 19th communication system issue and the alternative solutions implemented.
  • News Articles: Search online news sources for reports on PIA’s response to the communication system challenge. Broader news coverage might shed more light on the specific details of the event.

Appreciation for PIA’s Efforts:

PIA’s ability to adapt and ensure continued flight operations despite a communication system challenge deserves recognition. Their focus on passenger safety and minimizing disruptions is commendable.

Criticism of PIA’s Underwhelming Performance Why?

PIA once set a high standard for airlines globally, but unfortunately, mismanagement and corruption have tarnished its reputation worldwide. Despite having the resources and solutions to succeed, PIA continues to incur losses, raising questions about the integrity of its management system. It’s disheartening to see a once-esteemed institution plagued by dishonesty and disloyalty, leading to its downfall. The airline’s potential for excellence is being undermined by internal flaws, leaving many to wonder why PIA’s management cannot harness its strengths to restore its former glory.

5 Powerful Techniques to Enhance Your Machine Learning Models

In the realm of machine learning, building a model is just the first step. The true test lies in its effectiveness. To get the most out of your models and achieve optimal performance, here are 5 key strategies you can employ:

  1. Master the Data: Cleaning and Feature Engineering

Data is the lifeblood of machine learning. Before diving into algorithms, ensure your data is clean and ready for analysis. This involves handling missing values, outliers, and inconsistencies. Feature engineering is another crucial step. It involves creating new features from existing data to improve the model’s ability to identify patterns.

  1. Combat Overfitting: Regularization and Early Stopping

Overfitting occurs when your model memorizes the training data too well, leading to poor performance on unseen data. Regularization techniques like L1 or L2 penalty can help reduce overfitting by introducing constraints that prevent the model from becoming overly complex. Another approach is early stopping, where you halt the training process when the model’s performance on a validation set starts to decline.

  1. Explore Different Algorithms: Experimentation is Key

There’s no one-size-fits-all algorithm in machine learning. Choosing the right one depends on your problem and data characteristics. Experiment with a variety of algorithms, such as decision trees, support vector machines, or neural networks. Evaluate their performance on validation data to determine the best fit for your specific task.

  1. Leverage Ensemble Methods: Strength in Numbers

Instead of relying on a single model, consider using ensemble methods. These techniques combine predictions from multiple models, often leading to more robust and accurate results. Popular ensemble methods include bagging, boosting, and stacking.

  1. Hyperparameter Tuning: Finding the Sweet Spot

Machine learning algorithms often have parameters that control their behavior. Tuning these hyperparameters is crucial for optimal performance. Techniques like grid search or randomized search can help you explore different parameter combinations and identify the configuration that yields the best results.

While achieving high accuracy is important, it’s also beneficial to understand how your model arrives at its predictions. Explainable AI techniques can help you gain insights into the model’s decision-making process, fostering trust and improving overall model interpretability.

By incorporating these strategies into your machine learning workflow, you can significantly improve the performance and robustness of your models. Remember, the journey to a successful model is iterative – experiment, analyze, and refine to achieve the desired results.

Female camel from Sanghar district stands for first time after brutal incident

A female camel named Kemi, who suffered a brutal attack in Sindh’s Sanghar district, is showing remarkable signs of recovery. The Animal Shelter Home, where Kemi is undergoing treatment, announced that she has managed to stand on her three legs for the first time since the incident, a significant milestone attributed to consistent massage and physical therapy over the past few weeks. Her injured leg is being meticulously treated with daily dressing and bandaging.

The harrowing incident occurred in Mund Jamrao village, where a landlord allegedly chopped off Kemi’s leg as punishment for scavenging his field for fodder. Kemi’s owner, Soomer Khan, expressed his distress, saying, “I have no enmity with anyone. I don’t know why this was done to my camel.”

The incident came to light after a video of Kemi with her severed leg went viral on social media, prompting widespread outrage. Sanghar Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) took immediate action, lodging an FIR against unknown persons under sections 429 and 34 of the Pakistan Penal Code. Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah intervened, ensuring Kemi received an artificial leg and was transferred to Karachi for further treatment.

On July 9, the Additional Sessions Judge granted bail to six accused individuals—Darya Khan Shar, Jaffer Butt, Abid Shar, Abdul Shakoor Shar, Gul Baig Lashari, and Rustam Shar—each released on surety bonds of Rs 200,000. During the investigation, two of the suspects, Abdul Shakoor Shar and Abid Shar, confessed to their crime. The case is scheduled for the next hearing on July 12.

Despite the trauma, Kemi is making significant progress due to the dedicated care she is receiving at the Animal Shelter Home. She continues to undergo daily treatment and physical therapy, and her recovery is closely monitored, offering a glimmer of hope amidst the tragedy.

Thailand Expands Visa-Free Entry to 93 Countries – Is Pakistan Included?

Thailand Expands Visa-Free Entry to 93 Countries – Is Pakistan Included?

Thailand has taken a significant step to invigorate its tourism sector by announcing visa-free entry for citizens of 93 countries. This policy, effective immediately, allows visitors from these nations to stay in Thailand for up to 60 days without needing a visa, providing a substantial boost to the tourism industry.

Previously, only citizens from 57 countries enjoyed the privilege of visa-free entry. The new policy expansion includes major tourist markets such as the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, and Canada, as well as emerging markets like India, China, and Brazil. However, Pakistani citizens are notably absent from the visa-free list.

This strategic move aims to attract millions of additional tourists, further revitalizing Thailand’s economy, which heavily relies on tourism. In the first half of this year alone, Thailand recorded 17.5 million foreign visitors, marking a 35% increase compared to the same period in 2023. The expanded visa-free policy is expected to significantly enhance these numbers, reinforcing Thailand’s status as a top travel destination.

In addition to the visa-free expansion, Thailand has introduced other visa-related changes to foster a more welcoming environment for international visitors and skilled workers. A new five-year visa allows foreign workers to stay for up to 180 days per year, providing greater flexibility for employment opportunities. Furthermore, international students with bachelor’s degrees or higher can now stay in Thailand for a year post-graduation to explore job opportunities or travel plans.

These initiatives reflect Thailand’s commitment to attracting skilled workers and talented graduates, while also enhancing the tourism experience for global visitors. The tourism industry, which has been steadily recovering from the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, is poised for a significant surge in tourist arrivals due to these progressive policies.

While Pakistani citizens await potential inclusion in the visa-free scheme, Thailand continues to explore new ways to strengthen global connections and enhance its tourism potential. The new visa-free policy is a testament to Thailand’s dedication to creating a vibrant and welcoming environment for visitors from around the world.

Pakistan Railway announces massive increase in fares

Pakistan Railway announces massive increase in fares

Pakistan Railways has announced an increase in fares for both passenger and freight trains, effective from July 19, 2024. This fare hike follows the government’s decision to raise petroleum prices, which has significantly impacted the operational costs of the rail network.

Passenger train fares have been raised by 1%, affecting all classes including economy, AC standard, AC business, and AC parlor. This increase applies to mail, express, and intercity trains, as well as those operated under public-private partnerships. Freight train fares have been increased by 2%, marking a further adjustment following a previous 3% increase that took effect on July 3, 2024.

The recent rise in petroleum prices has been a key factor behind this fare adjustment. Petrol prices were increased by Rs. 9.99 per liter, setting the new price at Rs. 275.60 per liter. High-speed diesel prices rose by Rs. 6.18 per liter, reaching Rs. 283.63 per liter, and kerosene oil prices increased by Rs. 1.83 per liter. Despite previous reductions in petroleum prices, no corresponding fare relief was provided, making this recent hike a necessary step to offset rising operational costs and maintain service quality.

Divisional superintendents have been instructed to update fare tables accordingly to reflect these changes. The fare increase is part of broader financial strategies aimed at balancing revenue generation with operational sustainability. Pakistan Railways has reported record revenue generation for the financial year 2023-24, reaching Rs. 88 billion, a 40% growth over the previous year’s Rs. 63 billion. This exceeded the government’s target of Rs. 73 billion by an additional Rs. 15 billion, highlighting improved efficiency and growing service demand.

ICC grapples with $20M loss from T20 World Cup 2024 in the USA

The ICC is grappling with significant financial losses from hosting the T20 World Cup 2024 in the USA, estimated at approximately USD 20 million. This issue will be a focal point at the ICC Annual Conference, commencing on Friday in Colombo. Although not on the official nine-point agenda of the AGM, the losses will be scrutinized in a “post-event report.”

A substantial portion of the tournament, including the marquee India-Pakistan match in New York, took place in the USA, highlighting the challenges of hosting major events in new locations. The financial ramifications of this venture are critical for the ICC, which will need to dissect the causes of these losses and their impact on future hosting decisions.

Another significant topic at the AGM is the potential leadership transition within the ICC. There is considerable interest in the timeline for BCCI secretary Jay Shah replacing Greg Barclay as ICC chairman. Shah, with one year left as BCCI secretary before his cooling-off period begins in 2025, could assume the ICC chairmanship in 2025. This move would prevent Barclay from completing his third term from December 2024 to December 2026.

To facilitate this transition, there is a proposal to alter the ICC chairman’s term structure from three terms of two years each to two terms of three years each. This change aims to maintain the cumulative six-year term while providing stability in leadership.

If approved, Barclay’s current term could extend to three years, allowing Shah to step in as ICC chairman during his BCCI cooling-off period. Shah could then potentially return to become BCCI president in 2028. His anticipated leadership is expected to bring fresh perspectives and potential changes in ICC policies and strategies.

“It is not about how but when, as he still has one year left as BCCI secretary before his cooling off period in the Indian board starts in 2025 as per the constitution. However, if he has to take over in 2025, then Barclay can’t complete his third term of two years from December 2024 to December 2026,” the ICC source told Press Trust of India (PTI).

“There is a school of thought that what if ICC’s chairmanship term changes from three terms of two years each to two terms of three years, so the cumulative term can remain six years.”

The AGM will be closely monitored for decisions affecting global cricket governance, financial strategies, and the future leadership structure of the ICC. The outcomes will shape the ICC’s strategic direction and governance in the years to come, making this conference pivotal for the organization.
