SSGC suspends gas supply to industries in Karachi

The gas crisis in Karachi deepens as the Sui Southern Gas Company Limited (SSGC) announces a 48-hour suspension of gas supply to industries, CNG stations, and captive power plants, citing shortages and low pressure as the primary reasons. The interruption is scheduled from December 23, 8 am, to December 25, 8 am, affecting vital sectors in the city.

Earlier in the week, SSGC had requested a substantial increase of Rs226.18 per metric million British thermal units (mmBtu) in gas prices, citing a revenue shortfall of Rs47,773 million in the current fiscal year. The Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA) is set to consider SSGC’s plea for the price hike.

Amid these developments, the Sindh High Court (SHC) steps in, suspending the gas tariff hike notification specifically for the textile industry. OGRA’s issuance of a notification for increased gas tariffs for the textile sector prompted legal action, and the SHC’s order offers temporary relief to textile manufacturers by suspending the implementation of the contentious notification.

However, textile manufacturers must deposit a specified amount with the court’s Nazir within seven days to avail of this suspension, highlighting the complex dynamics surrounding the gas pricing issue in Karachi.

PSO deals with massive financial crisis as receivables cross Rs. 800 Billion

Pakistan State Oil (PSO) is grappling with a financial crisis as its receivables have surged to a staggering Rs. 802 billion, marking a drastic increase since August 2021 when the figure stood at Rs. 362 billion. The substantial rise in receivables includes a notable increase from a public gas utility, reaching Rs. 519 billion, with Rs. 150.8 billion owed by power generation companies.

Of particular concern are outstanding price differential claims, with Rs. 8.9 billion pending against the government. Major power sector defaulters, such as Hubco and Kapco, further exacerbate the situation, with dues amounting to Rs. 29.5 billion and Rs. 5 billion, respectively.

The struggle to pay pending dues extends to oil refineries, with PSO facing unprecedented levels of payables. The largest fuel supplier in the country owes Rs. 48.8 billion to various refineries, including Rs. 26.6 billion to Parco, Rs. 8.4 billion to Pakistan Refinery Limited, Rs. 4.1 billion to National Refinery Limited, Rs. 6.9 billion to Attock Refinery Limited, Rs. 1.7 billion to Byco, and Rs. 1 billion to Enar.

This financial crunch is impacting PSO’s operational efficiency, reflecting the challenges and financial instability faced by the country’s largest fuel supplier. As liabilities continue to mount, the situation calls for urgent measures to address the outstanding dues and ensure the smooth functioning of PSO’s operations.

Peshawar University May Shut Down Due to Teacher’s Boycott

The Peshawar University Teachers Association (PUTA) is on the brink of a significant protest as they threaten to boycott classes in response to the prolonged non-payment of salaries. This escalation comes as Class III and IV employees have been on strike for months, adding to the financial turmoil within the university.

Concerns for the students initially held back the teaching staff from participating in protests. However, the gravity of the situation has compelled PUTA to take a stand against the unprecedented financial crisis. The blame for this crisis is squarely placed on former Vice-Chancellor Dr. Muhammad Idrees.

PUTA is demanding immediate measures to address the salary arrears, setting a tight deadline of 24 hours for action. Failing this, they threaten to stage a sit-in outside the Governor’s House, signaling a heightened level of unrest.

Public sector universities in the province have been grappling with a financial crisis, a predicament now described by PUTA as unprecedented in the university’s 70-year history. The urgency for a resolution is growing, emphasizing the need for swift intervention to alleviate the financial challenges faced by public sector universities.

Govt releases all women, children of Baloch protest

In a swift turn of events, the caretaker government has ordered the release of women and children among the Baloch protesters who faced a heavy police crackdown in Islamabad. Privatisation minister Fawad Hasan Fawad, acting on the directives of Prime Minister Kakar, confirmed the release during a press conference. The detained Baloch protesters had earlier been subjected to water cannons and baton charges, prompting widespread condemnation from human rights organizations and analysts.

Facing mounting criticism, the Baloch Yekjehti Committee filed a petition in the Islamabad High Court, where the Chief Justice issued a warning against hindering peaceful protests. In response, Caretaker Premier Kakar formed a three-member committee, comprising Solangi, Fawad, and Jamal Shah, to engage in negotiations with the protesters’ families.

Following talks, an immediate release order was issued, leading to the release of the women and children. The committee held a press conference in the federal capital, highlighting the use of force to prevent a potential catastrophe.

Fawad Hasan Fawad asserted that ongoing peaceful protests outside the press club were continuing without interference, blaming local elements for exploiting the situation and sparking clashes between protesters and law enforcement. Masked individuals reportedly threw stones during the protest.

While the Islamabad High Court sought a report from the Islamabad Inspector General about the protesters, the government refrained from making decisions on the sub-judice matter. The police were directed to release all women and children, though some remain unidentified. Fawad emphasized the security situation, citing “clear and credible evidence” of potential exploitation if protests continue on main streets.

The incident underscores concerns about the delicate security environment in Pakistan, raising questions about the government’s handling of protests and the need for a careful balance between security and citizens’ right to dissent.

Pakistani footballers appeal to PFF to launch domestic league

In a collective plea to FIFA and the Asian Football Confederation (AFC), Pakistani footballers are urgently calling for the revival of the country’s Premier League and second-tier league, both absent from the football scene for the past eight years. Expressing astonishment at FIFA and AFC’s apparent lack of attention to the prolonged absence of the Pakistan Premier League (PPL), players highlight the severe financial hardships they face in the absence of domestic football events.

The players emphasize a basic demand for FIFA and AFC to play a pivotal role in reviving the domestic football leagues, including the Premier League and the second-tier league. The Premier League, in particular, served as a crucial income source for players, contributing significantly to their financial stability. The absence of these leagues has inflicted substantial financial damage, compelling footballers to seek alternative employment to support their families amidst high inflation.

The players underscore the vital role FIFA can play in improving their livelihoods by ensuring the revival of the Premier League and the second-tier league. In the past, mainstream footballers could earn around Rs2 million during the Premier League season, highlighting the economic impact of the league’s absence. Despite previous efforts to revive departmental sports by former Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, football teams remain reluctant to participate due to the prolonged absence of domestic football activities.

The last Pakistan Premier League in 2018/19 faced organizational challenges due to internal conflicts within the federations, leading to a disjointed tournament that has not been organized for the past four years under the FIFA-appointed Normalization Committee.

India high on alert as new COVID variant spreads rapidly across country

India is grappling with the emergence of the JN.1 variant of the Covid-19 virus, which was initially identified in Denmark and Israel in late July 2023. The new COVID variant has made its presence felt in India, with 2669 new active cases reported in a single day on Thursday.

Several states, including Kerala, Maharashtra, Jharkhand, and Karnataka, have witnessed a surge in Covid-19 cases, according to the Union Health Ministry. The total number of JN.1 variant cases in India has reached 21, as confirmed by Dr V K Paul, a member of NITI Aayog.

The JN.1 variant is a descendant of the BA.2.86 lineage (Pirola) of the coronavirus, representing a sub-variant with distinct characteristics. In Maharashtra, a 41-year-old individual in Sindhudurg district has tested positive for the JN.1 variant, signaling its presence in various regions.

Kerala, in particular, has reported 300 new active cases of Covid-19 and three deaths on December 20, as disclosed by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. In Karnataka, two deaths related to Covid-19 were reported on Wednesday, with uncertainty about their connection to the new sub-variant JN.1.

The nationwide concern is growing as the JN.1 variant raises questions about its potential impact on the overall Covid-19 situation in India. The Union Health Ministry is closely monitoring the situation, especially in states experiencing an upswing in Covid-19 cases.

To address the evolving scenario, authorities stress the importance of adhering to preventive measures to curb the spread of the virus. Public awareness campaigns are underway to keep citizens informed about the risks associated with the JN.1 variant and the significance of following health guidelines.

In response to the situation, increased genomic surveillance is deemed essential to track the spread and impact of new variants like JN.1. Ongoing investigations by health authorities aim to understand the transmission dynamics and severity associated with the JN.1 variant, providing valuable insights for effective public health strategies.

Winter Health Tips: Embracing Exercise and Fitness in the Winter Season

It can be difficult to find the motivation to work out when the temperature drops and the icy winds arrive. Cozy blankets and warm fireplaces are more enticing than the desire to move around. But it’s critical to understand how crucial it is to stay motivated—even in the most chilly circumstances.

As the temperature drops and the winter season sets in, maintaining a consistent fitness routine might seem challenging. However, staying active during the winter is crucial for both physical health and mental well-being. Here are some tips to embrace fitness and exercise during the colder months:

  • Shift your workout indoors to stay warm and motivated. Engage in home workouts, online fitness classes, yoga, or pilates to maintain consistency.

  • Don’t let the cold deter you from outdoor activities. Try winter sports like ice skating, skiing, snowboarding, or brisk walks in the crisp winter air.

  • Layer up with moisture-wicking and insulating clothing suitable for outdoor workouts. Protect extremities with gloves, hats, and proper footwear.

  • If available, make use of home exercise equipment like treadmills, stationary bikes, or resistance bands for a convenient indoor workout.

  • Opt for shorter yet more intense workouts to maintain momentum and motivation, especially on days when time feels limited.

  • Be flexible with your routine. Adjust workout timings or formats to accommodate changes in daylight hours or weather conditions.

  • Prioritize warming up before workouts to prevent injuries in the cold weather. Post-workout, indulge in stretching and cooling down exercises to ease muscles.

  • Stay hydrated and maintain a balanced diet rich in nutrients to support your body’s needs during winter workouts.

  • Consider joining virtual workout groups or partnering with friends or family members to stay motivated and accountable.

  • Respect your body’s cues. If weather conditions are extreme or if you’re feeling unwell, prioritize safety and adjust your workout accordingly.

Although the cold may make us less motivated to exercise, we can overcome these challenges and continue to be active throughout the winter with the correct techniques and attitude. We may overcome the challenges that winter brings by putting the advice we’ve discussed into practice, such as getting the proper exercise equipment, making a realistic activity schedule, looking for indoor workout options or enrolling in fitness classes. Use your workout partner’s influence to hold yourself accountable and for encouragement, and pay attention to your body’s requirements at all times.

Winter is a season that requires more work and perseverance, but it’s also a chance for us to demonstrate our fortitude and commitment to our health. Accept the difficulties, persevere through the cold, and never give up on your fitness objectives. You’ll feel the benefits in your body and mind.

Remember, staying active during the winter not only helps in managing weight but also boosts mood, energy levels, and immunity. Find activities that you enjoy and adapt your fitness routine to the winter season. Embracing a holistic approach to winter fitness ensures a healthier and more vibrant you, even amidst the chilly weather.

The day commenced with the rupee opening at 282 against the greenback, and by 11:30 PM, it had stabilized, reaching a high of 282 after experiencing an intraday gain of approximately Rs. 1.

The interbank rate exhibited fluctuations throughout the day, oscillating between 282 and eventually settling at 283. Open market rates observed across various currency counters ranged between 282 and 284.

Closing the day on a strong note, the Pakistani rupee appreciated by 0.07 percent, concluding at 283.01 after gaining 20 paisas against the US Dollar. This marks the sixth consecutive day of the rupee closing in the green. Despite a year-to-date depreciation of 19.99 percent, on a fiscal year-to-date basis, the rupee has managed a 1.05 percent appreciation.

Over the course of the year, the rupee has experienced a significant decline of nearly Rs. 65 since January 2023, with a more substantial depreciation of over Rs. 112 against the US Dollar since April 2022. The World Bank projects a decrease in remittance flows to Pakistan, forecasting $24 billion in 2023 and a further decline below $22 billion in 2024, accompanied by a 10 percent drop.

The World Bank attributes this trend to the rupee’s depreciation, economic challenges, a balance of payment crisis, and high debt, leading to a shift of remittances from formal to informal channels.

Kuwait Mourns the Passing of Emir Sheikh Nawaf al-Ahmad al-Sabah

Kuwait’s Emir, Sheikh Nawaf al-Ahmad al-Sabah, aged 86, has passed away, as confirmed by the royal court. The cause of his death was not immediately disclosed, although he had been admitted to the hospital last month for an emergency health problem.

Crown Prince Sheikh Meshal al-Ahmad al-Sabah, aged 83, is the designated successor and has been Kuwait’s de facto ruler since 2021. Sheikh Nawaf assumed the role of Emir in September 2020, succeeding his brother, Sheikh Sabah, who had ruled for over a decade.

Despite diplomatic challenges and a standoff between the government and elected parliament during his reign, Sheikh Nawaf was considered a consensus builder. The recent return to consensus between the government and parliament marked progress after hindrances to key structural reforms in the oil-rich Gulf state.

With Kuwait’s balanced foreign policy, fostering ties with neighboring countries, the nation faces a period of transition. According to Kuwait’s constitution, the crown prince automatically becomes the emir, but the assumption of power requires taking an oath in parliament. The new emir has up to a year to name an heir, signaling a potential period of changes in leadership for Kuwait.
