Police Chief Khadim Hussain Rind emphasizes the need for robust actions against hooliganism, stating that offenders will be brought under the full force of the law.

To counter negative impacts, the police stress the importance of conducting search operations, making announcements, and utilizing social media. A Pakistan Army soldier has been declared a martyr following a clash near the Afghanistan border, according to ARY News quoting ISPR. In the encounter near the Pakistan-Afghanistan border in Batwar, Bajaur district, security forces engaged with three terrorists attempting to infiltrate the border, resulting in their neutralization. The terrorists were found with a significant cache of weapons, ammunition, and explosives.

In a separate incident on the night of December 30/31, terrorists from Afghanistan targeted a Pakistani border post in Spinwam, North Waziristan district. The Pakistan Army retaliated effectively, causing substantial losses to the attackers. Naik Abdul Rauf, a 31-year-old soldier from Rahim Yar Khan district, fought gallantly but succumbed to injuries, embracing martyrdom.

The exchange of fire resulted in a significant setback for the terrorists. The ISPR emphasizes Pakistan’s consistent calls for the Interim Afghan Government to enhance border management, highlighting the Afghan Taliban’s obligation to prevent the use of Afghan soil for terrorism against Pakistan. These incidents underscore the challenges of border security and the persistent regional threat of terrorism.

Supreme Court declared me ‘Sadiq and Ameen’ – Declares Sheikh Rasheed

Sheikh Rasheed Ahmed, former interior minister and chief of the Awami Muslim League (AML), is facing a setback as the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) rejected his nomination papers for NA-56 and NA-57 in Rawalpindi for the upcoming 2024 general elections. Expressing frustration over not receiving a copy of the ECP’s decision, Rasheed asserts that the Supreme Court has previously declared him ‘Sadiq and Ameen’ (truthful and trustworthy).

The alleged reason for the rejection is an accusation that Rasheed did not pay rent for a rest house he resided in 12 years ago. Denying the claim vehemently, Rasheed challenges anyone to prove that he lived in such a rest house, offering to resign from politics if proven.

Despite this setback, Sheikh Rasheed remains determined to contest the elections and vows to move the Supreme Court to assert his rights. He emphasizes his commitment to the legal and constitutional process, expressing regret over what he perceives as a violation of the law to bring back a “corrupt person” to the country.

Announcing his intention to challenge the returning officer’s verdict in court, Rasheed is confident in the support of voters, claiming that victory is inevitable and there is no escape for the Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM). He believes success will be achieved through historical symbolism, referring to the ink pot with a pen.

Recently summoned to the commissioner’s office to address accusations related to the non-disclosure of a specific piece of land, Sheikh Rasheed stands firm in his commitment to the legal and constitutional process despite facing the rejection of his nomination papers.

NEPRA Increased Electricity Tariff in Karachi: K-Electric News 2023

Karachi, Pakistan’s vibrant metropolis, is facing an upward surge in electricity costs following a recent decision by the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA). The increase in electricity tariffs has sparked conversations and concerns among residents, prompting a closer look at the reasons behind this adjustment.

ISLAMABAD: In response to the power division’s proposal, the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) raised the cost of electricity for K-Electric (KE) customers by Rs 1.72 per unit.

The federal government will be notified of the decision after NEPRA granted the government’s proposal to raise the cost of electricity for KE power consumers by Rs 1.72 per unit.

Following a public hearing on the motion submitted by the power division in this regard, NEPRA granted this approval for the second and third quarters of FY22–23, respectively.

Understanding the Tariff Revision: NEPRA’s decision to hike electricity tariffs in Karachi stems from several factors, including rising fuel prices, increased generation costs, and the need to balance revenue shortfalls in the power sector.

Impact on Consumers: For residents and businesses in Karachi, the increased electricity costs may translate into higher monthly bills, affecting household budgets and operational expenses for various industries.

Challenges and Public Reaction: The tariff hike has sparked debates, with citizens expressing concerns about the financial burden on households and the impact on businesses already navigating economic challenges.

Context of Energy Sector Dynamics: Pakistan’s energy sector often grapples with issues related to inefficiencies, circular debt, and fluctuating fuel prices, contributing to periodic tariff revisions.

Balancing Act: NEPRA’s decision, while prompting costlier electricity, aims to strike a balance between ensuring sustainable power generation, addressing financial gaps in the energy sector, and meeting the operational costs of power providers.

Addressing Long-term Sustainability: Authorities stress the importance of these tariff adjustments in maintaining the viability and sustainability of the energy sector, which is crucial for ensuring uninterrupted power supply in the region.

Public Awareness and Mitigation Efforts: Amidst concerns, efforts to educate the public about efficient energy usage and cost-saving measures are crucial. Encouraging energy conservation practices might help alleviate the impact of increased tariffs.

Seeking Equitable Solutions: Efforts by stakeholders, including the government, regulatory bodies, and energy providers, are underway to explore equitable solutions that balance the need for sustainability with the burden on consumers.

Power division officials stated during the NEPRA hearing that K-Electric has not received this increase, hence these collections from KE customers must be done immediately. The Karachi business community, however, is adamantly against raising the cost of electricity.

The traders expressed that they could no longer afford the monthly increases in electricity prices. They claimed that businesses are being negatively impacted by rising electricity costs due to fluctuating fuel prices and occasionally consistent pricing. They claimed that everything would become pricey if electricity became more expensive. During a public hearing, a businessman stated, “Please let the business run. Karachi is an industrial and business hub.”

As Karachi grapples with increased electricity costs, a concerted effort from all stakeholders is imperative to address concerns, explore viable solutions, and strike a balance between ensuring sustainable energy supply and alleviating the financial strain on consumers and businesses.

IHC permits PTI leaders to hold election meeting with Imran Khan in jail

The Islamabad High Court has granted permission to PTI leaders and lawyers to visit former Prime Minister Imran Khan at Adiala Jail. Justice Miangul Hasan Aurangzeb passed the order in response to Imran’s petition seeking permission for election-related meetings and requesting privacy during consultations with party members.

As election-related activities unfold, with the poll schedule set for February 8, the deadline for filing nomination papers has passed. Returning officers will now examine papers from December 25 to December 30.

PTI Chairman Gohar Khan has stated that Imran will decide on ticket allotment, giving priority to PTI workers in jail, according to Barrister Ali Zafar. The Attorney-General for Pakistan, Mansoor Usman Awan, PTI lawyers, and the Adiala Jail superintendent appeared in the Islamabad High Court.

PTI counsel Shoaib Shaheen emphasized the need for discussions on the allotment of 700 tickets, leading to objections from the Attorney-General about the plea’s maintainability, which displeased Justice Aurangzeb.

The court granted PTI lawyers permission to hold consultations with Imran in jail, ordering a meeting between Gohar and Imran under the supervision of the jail superintendent. Justice Aurangzeb underscored the fundamental right to consultations on polls and emphasized the importance of caretaker neutrality.

He raised concerns about the interim government’s reluctance to allow consultations, questioning whether they aim to derail the polls. PTI lawyer Shaheen criticized the caretaker government’s stance, alleging they operate on orders and questioning the credibility of the puppet caretaker government. Additionally, he condemned police maltreatment of PTI Vice Chairman Shah Mahmood Qureshi outside Adiala Jail.

“They all have a problem with the fact that Imran Khan and the nation are on one page. Today, the public is standing with Imran Khan,” he asserted, adding that the ECP and elite political parties were seeing their defeat.

“What is the capacity or credibility left of this puppet caretaker government?” the lawyer asked. He also criticised the police maltreatment of PTI Vice Chairman Shah Mahmood Qureshi outside Adiala Jail earlier this week.

“We have made a mockery of ourselves in the entire world,” Shaheen added.

Russia launches deadly airstrikes across Ukraine, officials declare

Deadly Russian airstrikes wreaked havoc across Ukraine overnight and into early Friday, leaving a trail of destruction in their wake. Drones and various missiles targeted multiple locations, causing widespread damage in Kyiv, Sumy, Kharkiv, Dnipro, and Lviv, according to Ukrainian officials. The extent of casualties and damage remains unclear, but Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal described the onslaught as a “massive Russian airstrike.”

Ukrainian air defense forces are credited with successfully intercepting most of the air targets, showcasing the nation’s determination to protect its citizens. However, the Ukrainian Ministry of Health reported multiple injuries across the country, further emphasizing the toll of the relentless attacks.

The situation in Ukraine has taken a grim turn, with President Volodymyr Zelensky grappling with a stalled counteroffensive nearly two years after the initial Russian invasion. The future of Western military aid to Ukraine remains uncertain, raising concerns about the nation’s ability to withstand the ongoing aggression.

Ukrainian officials call for help to tackle airstrikes

The Head of Ukraine’s Presidential Office, Andriy Yermak, urgently called for international support against the Russian airstrikes. Ukrainian leaders face a daunting challenge as the Ukrainian Air Force detected the departure of nine Tu-95MS strategic bombers from Russia, signaling a sustained aerial assault.

Cities like Kyiv and Kharkiv are under immense pressure, with residents warned of a “UAV threat,” prompting calls to seek shelter. Kyiv Mayor Vitaliy Klitschko reported at least seven hospitalized and damage to a subway station. In Kharkiv, Mayor Ihor Terekhov described the city as “under massive rocket fire,” resulting in at least one casualty and eight injuries.

The international community closely monitors the situation, witnessing the unfolding crisis in Ukraine. Concerns persist about the escalation of geopolitical tensions and the impact on regional stability, prompting Ukrainian leaders to appeal for additional international support to address the ongoing Russian aggression. The search for victims is underway, with reports of casualties and damage emerging from various locations affected by the devastating airstrikes.

North Korea orders military to begin war preparations

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has issued a directive ordering the military, munitions industry, and nuclear weapons sector to accelerate war preparations in response to what he deems as unprecedented confrontational moves by the U.S., according to state media. Emphasizing the need for swift action to counter perceived threats, Kim outlined militant tasks for various sectors, raising concerns about heightened tensions on the Korean Peninsula.

Pyongyang also plans to expand strategic cooperation with “anti-imperialist independent” countries, as reported by news agency KCNA, indicating a potential shift in diplomatic alliances. North Korea has been strengthening ties with Russia, receiving technical support for its military capabilities amid accusations from Washington.

While Kim outlined economic goals for the new year, calling it a decisive year to accomplish the country’s five-year development plan, the focus on military preparations signals a continued commitment to strengthening North Korea’s defense capabilities. The move has raised concerns about regional stability and the potential for increased geopolitical tensions.

During the 9th plenary meeting of the 8th central committee of the Workers’ Party of Korea, North Korea enshrined its nuclear policy in the constitution, launched a spy satellite, and tested a new intercontinental ballistic missile. Kim’s call for cooperation with specific countries suggests a nuanced diplomatic strategy, while South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol emphasizes the importance of a robust defense posture in the face of North Korean provocations. The international community closely monitors North Korea’s actions, with the plenary meeting providing insights into the nation’s priorities and strategies for the future.
