Strengthening Bilateral Space Cooperation

Pakistan and China have agreed to set up a Space Science Training Centre, marking a new chapter in their growing collaboration in space technology and exploration. The initiative forms a key component of the 2025–2029 Joint Action Plan signed between the China National Space Administration (CNSA) and SUPARCO, Pakistan’s national space agency. By pooling resources and expertise, both countries aim to accelerate progress in astronaut training, satellite development, and deep space research.

Hub for Research and Skill Development

The upcoming centre will function as a hub for advanced research, hands-on training, and capacity building. Pakistani scientists, engineers, and researchers will gain access to Chinese expertise in areas such as spacecraft design, orbital mechanics, and mission planning. This collaboration is designed to build a skilled workforce capable of supporting Pakistan’s ambitions in space science, while also enhancing knowledge transfer between the two nations.

Alignment with Long-Term Space Goals

The Space Science Training Centre is aligned with the broader 2021–2030 Space Cooperation Outline Program. Under this framework, both countries have already identified joint objectives that include lunar exploration missions, satellite constellations, and deep space projects. Establishing the centre is expected to provide the technical foundation necessary to achieve these long-term goals, positioning Pakistan as an active contributor to global space initiatives.

Advancing Satellite and Astronaut Programs

One of the key focuses of the initiative is to strengthen Pakistan’s satellite technology capabilities. Training will emphasize not only design and manufacturing but also applications in communication, navigation, and earth observation. Additionally, astronaut training programs will prepare Pakistani professionals for potential future missions, reflecting an ambition to move beyond earth-bound projects toward human spaceflight and exploration.

A Step Toward Tech Diplomacy

Beyond scientific and technological benefits, the centre symbolizes the strengthening of Pakistan-China strategic ties in the realm of tech diplomacy. It highlights how cooperation in advanced fields such as space exploration can reinforce broader economic and political partnerships. As the initiative takes shape, it is set to provide Pakistan with both technical know-how and international credibility in space science.
