Pakistan Joins China’s International Organisation for Mediation

On May 30, 2025, Pakistan became a founding member of the International Organisation for Mediation (IOMed), a new global dispute resolution body initiated by China and headquartered in Hong Kong. Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Senator Mohammad Ishaq Dar signed the Convention on the Establishment of IOMed on behalf of Pakistan during a ceremony attended by representatives from over 30 countries, including Indonesia, Belarus, Cuba, and Serbia.

The IOMed aims to provide an alternative platform for resolving international disputes through mediation, distinguishing itself from judicial bodies like the International Court of Justice by emphasizing dialogue, mutual understanding, and consensus-building. Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi highlighted the organization’s role in promoting peaceful conflict resolution and moving beyond zero-sum approaches.

Hong Kong was selected as the headquarters for IOMed due to its unique legal system, which combines elements of both common law and Chinese law, making it well-suited for international legal services. The city’s status as a leading arbitration center in Asia further supports its role in hosting the organization.

Pakistan’s participation in IOMed aligns with its longstanding strategic partnership with China and reflects its commitment to multilateralism and peaceful dispute resolution. Deputy Prime Minister Dar expressed appreciation for China’s leadership in establishing IOMed and emphasized Pakistan’s readiness to play an active role in the organization’s mission.
