Pakistani YouTuber Asad Toor has been released from prison after being granted bail by a special court. Special judge Humayon Dilawar approved Toor’s bail application, requiring him to submit surety bonds worth Rs 5,000.
Toor’s arrest stemmed from an investigation initiated by a joint investigation team (JIT) to address what was described as a “malicious” social media campaign against Pakistan’s judiciary. Before his release, Toor’s physical remand was extended for three days.
Earlier, on February 24, he was summoned by the Federal Investigation Agency’s (FIA) cybercrime wing for questioning. Subsequently, on February 26, Toor was arrested on allegations of orchestrating a defamatory campaign against the judiciary through social media platforms X and YouTube, as outlined in the FIR.
The case surrounding Toor’s arrest has reignited discussions about freedom of speech and media censorship in Pakistan. His release has prompted further debate on the role of journalists and YouTubers in the country’s political landscape. Amid ongoing legal proceedings, the incident underscores the necessity of accountability and transparency in media practices.
