Pakistani cricket captain Babar Azam is set to be sacked from all formats, sources told Geo News Tuesday night. The decision comes after Pakistan’s disappointing performance in the ICC World Cup 2023, where they failed to qualify for the semi-finals.
If Azam does not submit his resignation, the PCB will sack him from the post. Shan Masood is a strong candidate to replace him as Test captain, while Shaheen Shah Afridi is likely to take over as T20I captain. Afridi may also lead the Green Shirts in next year’s T20 World Cup.
Azam was appointed white-ball captain in 2019 and Test captain in 2020, but Pakistan has not won any ICC or Asia Cup titles under his leadership. Despite going into the World Cup ranked as the top side, Pakistan failed to live up to expectations and crashed out of the tournament in the group stage.
Team director Mickey Arthur has thrown his support behind Azam, saying that it’s not a “crime to make mistakes.” However, it seems that Azam’s time as captain is coming to an end.
An announcement related to Azam’s captaincy is expected to be made after he meets with PCB Management Committee Chairman Zaka Ashraf later today.
