The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has taken significant action against illegal mobile phone activities, blocking 5,294 devices during the 2023-24 fiscal year. The crackdown also extended to the deactivation of 4,507 IMEI numbers connected to unlawful usage.

The authority’s comprehensive measures included blacklisting 113 national ID cards and issuing warnings to 19,730 mobile numbers linked to various illegal activities.

SIM Blocking for National Security

SIM cards involved in illegal activities have been reported to PTA through various channels. When matters involve national security, the Ministry of Interior (MoI), Directorate General ISI, and Signals Directorate GHQ instruct PTA to block SIMs tied to criminal activities.

In a recent operation, the PTA blocked 465 SIMs after a directive from the Ministry of Interior on July 25, 2023. These SIMs were reportedly used by criminals in the “Kacha” areas of Sindh, particularly in Shikarpur and Ghotki.

Three-Phase Plan to Combat SIM Fraud

PTA has also launched a three-phase plan to tackle the illegal use of SIMs. The first phase, initiated on August 16, 2024, focused on deactivating SIMs registered with fake credentials or canceled ID cards. The second phase, which began on September 2, 2024, targets SIMs linked to expired identification documents. The final phase will deactivate SIMs issued under the names of deceased individuals.

The PTA’s crackdown on illegal mobile activity, including fraudulent use of SIM cards and devices, is a critical step in ensuring the security of the country’s mobile network. The authority emphasized that it will continue to monitor and address unlawful activities tied to mobile phone usage to safeguard public security and prevent misuse of technology.
