The Pakistan Telecommunications Authority (PTA) recently published its Annual Report 2022 in which it is revealed that the administrative expenses of the organisation skyrocketed by 239% in just four years. The expenses were around 1 billion four years ago and were recorded 3.5 billion in 2022.
According to the report, Rs 926 million were given to employees as a compensation for absences and other perks. Meanwhile, Rs 585 were invested in equipment, property, and other intangible assets since 2018.
Contrastingly, the administrative expenses of other regulatory organisations are much lower. For example, the National Electric Lower Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) and the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA) are Rs 1.7 billion and Rs. 0.8 billion respectively.
Even in India, the Telecom Regulatory Authority which is regulating a huge industry worth INR 2.685 Trillion has reported its operating expense as INR 1 billion.
It’s shocking to see that PTA which is regulating a comparatively small industry (Rs 694 billion) has such a huge amount of operating expenses.
