10 October 2025 — In a landmark step toward environmental innovation, the Punjab government has introduced Pakistan’s first “EcoBot”, a smart digital assistant powered by artificial intelligence to help citizens monitor air quality and access environmental information in real time.
According to Secretary of the Environment Protection Department, the AI-enabled EcoBot has been launched to act as a direct communication bridge between the public and the department. Citizens can now check the Air Quality Index (AQI) of major cities — including Lahore, Faisalabad, Rawalpindi, and Multan — by simply sending a message to the platform.
Officials confirmed that the EcoBot uses advanced AI algorithms to interact with users efficiently and provide personalized environmental updates. The digital assistant not only delivers AQI data but also offers practical tips on protection against air pollution and promotes healthier living habits.
Environment Secretary Sajid Bashir emphasized that the initiative is part of Punjab’s vision to harness technology for a cleaner, greener, and more sustainable future. “We are committed to using innovative digital solutions to protect the environment and improve citizens’ quality of life,” he said.
Earlier this year, the Punjab government also made headlines by launching the SMART Environment Protection Force (SEPF) — another pioneering initiative aimed at combating pollution through technology-driven solutions.
The SMART Environment Protection Force, unveiled in April 2025 under the leadership of Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif, is equipped with drone surveillance systems, real-time AQI monitors, and mobile laboratories. The project marked a major milestone in the province’s environmental journey, as Maryam Nawaz described it as a “revolutionary step toward safeguarding Punjab’s natural resources.”
Officials noted that both EcoBot and the SEPF will work in tandem to provide accurate environmental data, streamline policy implementation, and encourage civic participation. These technological advancements highlight Punjab’s growing emphasis on AI integration, digital governance, and sustainable development in response to global climate challenges.
The EcoBot initiative is expected to expand in the coming months, with plans to integrate weather alerts, pollution control updates, and citizen feedback mechanisms to strengthen the government’s environmental management framework.
