The Punjab government has temporarily stopped accepting new applications for its flagship “Apni Zameen, Apna Ghar” housing scheme. The program, designed to provide low-income families with free residential plots, is now moving into its verification phase.
According to the Housing Minister Bilal Yasin, the government has received a total of 481,000 applications through the scheme’s digital portal. Of these, 367,000 have cleared the initial eligibility screening.
Now, the government is focusing on the allocation of 2,000 free plots across 19 districts in Punjab. Each district has formed a local scrutiny committee, led by the area’s Deputy Commissioner, to evaluate applications. These reports are expected to be finalized and submitted within a month.
In addition to land allotment, the scheme also promises interest-free loans of up to Rs1.5 million to help successful applicants build their homes. This dual approach aims to ensure that owning and building a house becomes a reality for financially vulnerable segments of society.
The selection process has been carefully designed to ensure fairness and transparency, and the government has pledged that no political or external influence will be tolerated in the selection of beneficiaries.
