Ramadan 2024 in Pakistan: Fidya, Fitrana, and Kaffarah Explained
As Ramadan approaches, Pakistani Muslims are preparing for the holy month. This year, prominent religious figure Mufti Muneebur Rehman has announced the guidelines for Fidya, Fitrana, and Kaffarah.
Understanding the Differences:
- Fidya: This is paid by individuals who are unable to observe all the fasts due to valid reasons like illness, travel, or pregnancy.
- Fitrana: This is a mandatory charity given to the poor before Eid al-Fitr to ensure everyone can celebrate.
- Kaffarah: This is a penalty for intentionally breaking a fast without a legitimate excuse.
Fidya Amounts (per missed fast):
- Wheat: Rs. 300
- Barley: Rs. 600
- Dates: Rs. 2,400
- Raisins: Rs. 4,400
Fitrana Amounts (per person):
- Wheat: Rs. 300
- Barley: Rs. 600
- Dates: Rs. 2,400
- Raisins: Rs. 4,400
Important Note: These are the minimum recommended amounts. Affluent individuals are encouraged to donate more.
Kaffarah for Breaking Fast:
If a fast is broken without a valid reason, Kaffarah requires providing two meals to 60 underprivileged individuals. This translates to:
- Wheat Flour (2 kg): Rs. 18,000
- Barley (4 kg): Rs. 36,000
- Dates (4 kg): Rs. 144,000
- Raisins (4 kg): Rs. 264,000
Key Points:
- Fidya and Fitrana can be distributed in the form of the mentioned food items or their equivalent cash value.
- It’s crucial to ensure the chosen charity distributes the donations effectively to those in need.
- Consult with local religious scholars for further guidance on specific situations.
Preparing for a Fulfilling Ramadan:
By understanding these guidelines and fulfilling their obligations, Pakistani Muslims can ensure a spiritually enriching Ramadan experience. Remember, the true essence of the holy month lies in compassion, self-discipline, and helping those less fortunate.
