The Sindh government has officially announced that all government and private schools and colleges in Karachi will remain closed on Wednesday, August 20, 2025. The decision was taken in light of urban flooding and continuous heavy rainfall, which have severely disrupted life in several parts of the city.
Sindh Education Minister Sardar Shah confirmed the closure following recommendations from local authorities who have been monitoring the deteriorating situation caused by ongoing monsoon showers.
Monsoon Rain Causes Severe Disruption
Over the past 48 hours, Karachi has experienced intense monsoon rainfall, resulting in widespread flooding and traffic chaos. Several major neighborhoods, including Gulistan-e-Johar, Korangi, Nazimabad, and Gulshan-e-Hadeed, have been submerged under accumulated rainwater.
Key roads such as Shahrah-e-Faisal, MA Jinnah Road, and University Road have been partially or completely blocked, halting routine traffic and stranding vehicles. The situation has created major difficulties for commuters and raised safety concerns for school-going children.
According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department, additional rainfall is expected throughout the week, increasing the risk of prolonged flooding and transportation challenges.
Response from City Authorities
City officials have initiated drainage and relief operations to reduce the impact of waterlogging. Pumps are being deployed to clear major roads, while emergency teams continue to work around the clock to restore access in the worst-hit areas.
Authorities have urged citizens to limit non-essential travel and exercise caution, particularly in waterlogged zones and near low-lying areas. The advisory also emphasized avoiding underpasses and busy intersections prone to flooding.
Context and Public Safety
The closure of educational institutions is aimed at ensuring the safety of students and staff, as commuting under the current conditions poses significant risks. Power outages, blocked streets, and stranded vehicles have further complicated daily routines across the city.
Officials have stated that schools and colleges will remain closed only for one day initially, but additional closures may be announced depending on weather developments. The decision reflects a precautionary approach by the government as Karachi continues to grapple with the challenges of seasonal rains.
