Free Parking Across Karachi Now a Reality
In a landmark decision aimed at improving urban accessibility, the Sindh government has formally ended charged parking across all 25 towns of Karachi. The move aligns with Mayor Murtaza Wahab’s vision of making public parking free throughout the city.
The Local Government Department issued an official notification on Friday, placing a complete ban on collecting parking fees on public roads across Karachi. This marks a significant shift in urban mobility policy and offers immediate financial relief to daily commuters.
Parking Fees Restricted to Designated Facilities
According to the notification, parking charges will now only be applicable at designated parking plazas, private plots, or areas officially managed by municipal councils. This means unauthorized collection of parking fees on streets or commercial zones is now illegal.
All town municipal corporations have been directed to implement the order without delay.
Crackdown on Illegal Parking Charges
The government has launched a citywide enforcement campaign to ensure the new policy is upheld. Officials have been instructed to take strict action against individuals or groups found collecting parking charges unlawfully.
Previously, the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) had already suspended fee collection on roads under its jurisdiction. The new directive now extends this to all 25 town municipal areas.

The decision comes under the directives of the Chief Minister of Sindh and has been welcomed by residents and civil society. Mayor Murtaza Wahab emphasized that the measure serves public interest and aims to curb the long-standing issue of unauthorized fee collection.
