The hashtag #BoycottPSL has been making waves on Twitter as the Pakistan Super League (PSL) announced its partnership with KFC for the upcoming season, PSL 9. However, this partnership has stirred controversy amidst the ongoing conflict between Palestine and Israel.
Many Muslims worldwide, including in Pakistan, have joined the boycott, expressing their displeasure at KFC’s association with the league. They argue that by partnering with KFC, PSL is indirectly supporting the ongoing atrocities in Palestine.
While KFC Pakistan itself is not directly linked to the conflict, the main KFC chain, owned by Yum! Brands, operates in countries that support Israel. Yum! Brands, the parent company of KFC, also owns other popular food chains like Pizza Hut, Taco Bell, and The Habit Burger Grill. It’s been alleged that Yum! Brands’ subsidiaries have provided free food to Israeli soldiers involved in brutalities against Palestinians.
The league, however, announced several other sponsors for the season, including TikTok, Osaka Batteries, and Tapal Danedar among others. Despite these partnerships, the controversy surrounding KFC has overshadowed the excitement for the upcoming cricket season.
PSL 2024 is set to kick off today, February 17, in Lahore, with the first match featuring Islamabad United versus Lahore Qalandars. While cricket fans eagerly anticipate the start of the tournament, the #BoycottPSL movement underscores the complexities of navigating sponsorship deals in the face of global socio-political tensions.
