Diabetes

According to opticians, there are some warning signs of diabetes that can directly affect your eyes, and by the time you realise, the condition might have worsened already.

While redness around the eyes may not sound something to worry about, opticians warn that it could be a sign of Type 2 diabetes.

Kyla Black from Books Opticians says, “Eye tests check your vision and whether you need glasses. But they also play a vital role in checking for potential serious health conditions such as diabetes.

She was addressing to the audience on the occasion of the Diabetes Awareness Week and said that there are five hidden symptoms of diabetes that one should never ignore.

Ms. black has over 25 years of experience as an optometrist and she lists these five eye conditions as diabetes warning signs

  • Gradually worsening vision
  • Sudden lost of vision
  • Blurred/Patchy vision
  • Shapes floating in front of eyes
  • Redness of eyes/Eye pain

Experts suggest that in diabetes eyes get affected due to diabetic retinopathy, which can even lead to blindness if left untreated. However, it taken years and prolonged illness for a patient to get to this stage. High glucose levels and high blood pressures are the major reasons for this condition.

ms. Black also said, “It may not show any obvious symptoms until the condition is more advanced.”
