Gary Kirsten resigned as Pakistan’s head coach for the ODIs and T20Is six months before his two-year contract was to be over. He leaves when the white-ball tour of Australia awaits the team. That puts the Pakistan Cricket Board in a tight spot. In an interesting twist, Kirsten left without coaching a single ODI match.
Pakistan’s former skipper and ex-chairman Ramiz Raja did say that this resignation may affect future recruitments if Kirsten leaves the board. This revelation comes at a time when the PCB failed in its negotiations with other potential candidates, including Shane Watson and Darren Sammy, who have said no to offers from the board earlier in the year. Ramiz clarified that clearly defined roles and expectations are crucial to avoid such an issue in the future.
“When you search for international coaches, with the kind of backlash that you will probably get from Gary Kirsten’s resignation…it’s not going to be an easy, straightforward job for Pakistan to hire international talent,” Ramiz told reporters in a media interaction ahead of the Australia tour.
“What you need to do is to make sure that once you involve and engage somebody, you’ve got to give them clarity regarding the role.
“I don’t know whether that clarity was given to Gary Kirsten or how he wanted to get Pakistan into this one-day phase, what he wanted to achieve. I’m not privy to that.
“It’s not great news [Kirsten’s departure] because Pakistan needed an experienced hand. From a distance, it doesn’t look great just before a tour.”
The dynamics within the coaching staff seem to be stretched to the limit. There were reports of a row between Kirsten and newly appointed Test coach Jason Gillespie, which led the PCB to take away the selection powers from both after suffering a humiliating defeat against England. In a shocking twist, the PCB has constituted its third selection panel within three months, this time with umpire Aleem Dar, whose eligibility has raised eyebrows.
As the team prepares to take on the Australia series with Mohammad Rizwan donning the mantle of the new white-ball captain, the commentator hopes for stability from Rizwan’s demanding cricket calendar. Leadership and a consistent approach will be needed in Pakistan’s quest for success in international cricket, according to Ramiz.

Right now, there’s a little bit of a hodgepodge where the selection committee is nominating the playing XI. I’m not too sure it happens anywhere else in the world. I just hope Rizwan gets his playing XI that he feels comfortable with.”
