City Authorities Impose New Restrictions Under Section 144
Karachi Commissioner Syed Hasan Naqvi has announced an extension of the ban on two-seater and four-seater rickshaws, adding six more major roads to the restricted list. This decision, implemented under Section 144 of the CrPC, follows recommendations from DIG Traffic Peer Muhammad Shah to improve the city’s worsening traffic flow.
The ban, initially enforced on October 17, 2025, covered 20 major roads. With the latest update, restrictions now apply to 26 key routes, including Shahrah-e-Faisal, in an effort to reduce congestion and streamline vehicular movement.
List of Restricted Roads for Rickshaws
The newly added roads where rickshaws are now prohibited include:
- Shahrah-e-Faisal
- II Chundrigar Road
- Shahrah-e-Quaideen
- Shershah Suri Road
- Shaheed-e-Millat Road
- Abdullah Haroon Road to Do Talwar
Other previously restricted roads remain in effect, such as University Road, Rashid Minhas Road, Mauripur Road, and Korangi Road, among others.
Traffic Police Report Highlights Rickshaw-Related Issues
The decision comes after Karachi Traffic Police identified unauthorized rickshaws as a major cause of traffic jams. Many operate without permits and follow self-designated routes, leading to frequent obstructions and safety hazards on key roads. The report emphasized that these vehicles contribute significantly to the city’s chronic congestion problem.
Additional Measures to Control Karachi’s Traffic Chaos
In response to growing public frustration, the Sindh government has also:
- Banned heavy vehicles during daytime
- Imposed a 30 km/h speed limit for HTVs (Heavy Transport Vehicles)
These measures aim to improve road safety and ensure smoother traffic flow in one of the world’s most densely populated cities.
