Russia carried out a devastating attack on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, targeting the country for the 12th time this year. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said that in the strikes, 93 missiles and more than 200 drones were launched, while Ukrainian defenses intercepted as many as 81 of the missiles. Energy facilities in several western regions, including Ivano-Frankivsk, were severely damaged during the attack, which officials termed as the worst attack on the region so far.
Moscow declared the strikes as revenge for Ukraine’s missile attack on a military airbase in southwest Russia. The base was reportedly hit using US-made ATACMS missiles. Kyiv has used these long-range missiles since October 2023, but intensified attacks on Russian territory have brought the conflict to a boiling point.
US President-elect Donald Trump, named Time Magazine’s Person of the Year, expressed strong opposition to the use of American-made missiles in strikes on Russian soil. He described the situation as “crazy” and criticized the escalation. The Kremlin welcomed Trump’s remarks, with spokesperson Dmitry Peskov calling them in line with Russia’s stance. Trump mentioned his desire for negotiations about ending the war, saying that “we will not abandon” efforts for peace.
The attack occurred on one of Ukraine’s coldest days of the winter when temperatures reached -6°C. Destruction was caused in the Lviv and Ternopil areas, but there were no losses in the critical infrastructure of the Kyiv region, said Governor Ruslan Kravchenko. Nonetheless, the Ukrenergo National Power Company was forced to introduce rollover blackouts across the country to deal with the downed energy supply. Ukraine imported electricity from neighboring countries, including Poland and Romania, to stabilize the grid.
The war, which began in February 2022, has lost Ukraine enormous ground. Russia has regained some 2,350 square kilometers of its territory in eastern Ukraine and parts of Russia’s Kursk region. As the military conflict continues to gain momentum, it seems both nations are caught in a catastrophic spree of retaliation.
