Senate Committee Raises Concerns Over FIA Corruption and Illegal Call Centers in Pakistan

The Senate Standing Committee on Information Technology and Telecom, led by Senator Palwasha Khan, convened a meeting to address pressing issues including illegal call centers, the Federal Investigation Agency’s (FIA) performance, and the protection of citizens’ data.

During the session, FIA officials reported that 13 suspects have been named in FIRs linked to illegal call centers. These individuals are accused of extorting money and engaging in fraudulent operations, raising serious concerns about cybersecurity and regulatory oversight in Pakistan.

Senator Rasheed highlighted the reputational impact, stating that Pakistan faces growing international criticism over the proliferation of illegal call centers. Lawmakers stressed the need for stricter monitoring and accountability measures to prevent such operations and safeguard public trust.

The committee also questioned FIA’s effectiveness in addressing corruption within its own ranks, emphasizing that systemic reforms are essential to restore confidence in the agency. Members called for enhanced inter-agency coordination, better surveillance, and stronger enforcement of laws governing telecommunication operations.

With digital platforms becoming increasingly central to business and citizen services, the committee underscored that illegal call centers pose both financial and security threats. Protecting personal data and cracking down on fraudulent networks were identified as top priorities for national IT governance.

The session concluded with a recommendation for the FIA to provide regular updates on investigations, ensure timely prosecution of suspects, and develop strategies to curb illegal call centers nationwide. The committee also urged the government to consider technological solutions to monitor and prevent future abuses.
