FBR Extends Income Tax Return Deadline to October 15, 2026
The Federal Board of Revenue has extended the deadline for filing income tax returns for Tax Year 2026 from September 30 to October 15, 2026, giving eligible taxpayers another 15 days to complete their filing.
The extension applies to people who were originally required to submit their income tax returns by September 30. FBR granted the extension under Section 214A of the Income Tax Ordinance, 2001, following requests from trade bodies and tax bar associations.
Who Gets the October 15 Extension?
The general extension applies to taxpayers whose Tax Year 2026 return was due on September 30.
FBR’s normal filing schedule generally places individuals and Associations of Persons on a September 30 deadline, while companies normally have a December 31 due date unless they operate under a special tax year.
Taxpayers should therefore check the deadline applicable to their own filing category rather than assuming every business or company now has an October 15 deadline.
Is the Extension Official?
Yes.
There was confusion before the announcement because an unofficial notification claiming that the filing date had already been extended circulated online. FBR initially warned that the circulating document was fake.
The official extension was subsequently announced and is now reflected among FBR’s current official updates.
This makes it particularly important for taxpayers to rely on FBR’s website and official channels rather than screenshots or forwarded social-media messages.
Why Did FBR Extend the Deadline?
The extension followed requests from trade organisations and tax-bar associations.
Tax professionals and business organisations had raised concerns during the closing days of September, including complaints about difficulties completing returns and pressure on taxpayers approaching the deadline. FBR ultimately granted the 15-day nationwide extension.
How Can You File Your Income Tax Return?
Tax returns can be filed through FBR’s IRIS online system.
Taxpayers should make sure their personal information, income details, assets and other required declarations are correctly entered before submitting the return.
Those who have already filed do not need to file another return simply because the deadline has been extended.
Should You Wait Until October 15?
Although October 15 is now the deadline for affected taxpayers, waiting until the final day could create unnecessary problems if there is heavy traffic on the IRIS system or additional information is required.
People who still need to file should ideally use the extra time to complete their documentation and submit the return earlier.
